Buzz Lightyear Movie without Tim Allen Falls Far Short of Box Office Expectations

Disney’s new Buzz Lightyear movie without Tim Allen has fallen far short of box office expectations.

The new “Toy Story” spinoff “Lightyear” tanked in its opening weekend compared to other movies in the franchise.

“Lightyear” brought in only $51 million from 4,255 North American theaters.

Internationally, “Lightyear” earned $34.6 million bringing its global total to $85.6 million.

“Jurassic World Dominion” was number one domestically with $58.6 million in ticket sales.

Meanwhile “Top Gun: Maverick” is still doing massive numbers and came in third with $44 million.

Many have criticized the movie for replacing Tim Allen as the voice of Buzz Lightyear.

Hollywood actress Patricia Heaton said earlier: “Saw the trailer for Buzz Lightyear and all I can say is Disney/Pixar made a HUGE mistake in not casting my pal Tim Allen in the role that he originated, the role that he owns.

“Tim IS Buzz! Why would they completely castrate this iconic, beloved character?”

“Ok so the current Buzz Lightyear movie is an origin story – but the reason the character became so beloved is because of what @ofctimallen created.

“This is a soft opening for a spinoff of one of the most successful animation series of all time,” says David A. Gross.

“‘Toy Story’ defied gravity at the box office during its 27-year run, each episode topping the last, the last two clearing a billion dollars worldwide.

“But like all spinoffs, the ‘Lightyear’ story is narrower now.”

According to Variety:

“Even with a colossal 60% decline, “Jurassic World Dominion” managed to capture the box office crown again in a surprise upset. Universal’s prehistoric sequel generated $58.6 million from 4,697 cinemas in its second weekend of release, bringing its domestic total to $259 million.

“In third place, “Top Gun: Maverick” keeps flying high with a mammoth $44 million from 4,035 venues in North America, marking a scant 15% drop from last weekend.

“Those box office returns are especially significant because the film has been playing in theaters for a month. Only one other film that debuted in wide release has generated more in its fourth box office weekend — “Avatar,” with $50 million.

“To date, the sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun” has grossed $466 million in the U.S. and Canada and $885 million globally, making the film the biggest blockbuster in Tom Cruise’s decades-long career.

“Disney’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” took the No. 4 slot with $4.2 million from 2,455 locations. After seven weekends on the big screen, the Marvel comic book sequel has amassed an impressive $405.1 million in North America.”

Director Angus MacLane said:

“Tim’s version of Buzz is a little goofier and is a little dumber, and so he is the comic relief.

“In this film, Buzz is the action hero.

“He’s serious and ambitious and funny, but not in a goofy way that would undercut the drama.

“Chris Evans has the gravitas and that movie-star quality that our character needed to separate him and the movie from Tim’s version of the toy in Toy Story.

“I’m not really interested in repeating stuff or reminding audiences of better movies, but there are a lot of visual lessons from movies of that era,” he said.

As Slay News previously reported, many have cited Disney’s efforts to include far-left messaging and “woke” themes in the movie for its flop.
