The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability voted Wednesday to advance contempt of Congress resolutions against Bill and Hillary Clinton after the Democrat power couple refused to comply with lawful subpoenas related to the committee’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.
In a striking development, several Democrats, including members aligned with the party’s progressive wing, joined Republicans in voting to hold Bill Clinton in contempt, signaling growing pressure on the Clintons even within their own party.
Among the Democrats voting with Republicans were Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), both of whom are typically reliable opponents of GOP-led oversight efforts.
The committee voted 34–9 to advance contempt proceedings against Bill Clinton and 28–15 against Hillary Clinton.
Two Democrats voted “present” on the Bill Clinton vote, while one voted “present” on Hillary’s.
Subpoenas Rejected, Committee Says
Both Clintons were subpoenaed as part of the committee’s ongoing probe into Epstein’s activities and his relationships with powerful political figures.
They were scheduled to appear earlier this month, but failed to do so.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) said the committee had no choice but to move forward after repeated attempts to accommodate the former first couple.
“The committee does not take this action lightly. Subpoenas are not mere suggestions,” Comer said, according to Fox News.
“They carry the force of law and require compliance.
“Former President Clinton and Secretary Clinton were legally required to appear for depositions before this committee.”
Comer said the Clintons’ attorneys proposed an alternative arrangement.
They insisted on a private meeting in New York with no official transcript and limited participation.
However, Comer slammed the offer and called it unacceptable.
“The Clintons’ latest demands make clear they believe their last name entitles them to special treatment,” Comer said.
“The House Oversight Committee rejects the Clintons’ unreasonable demands and will move forward with contempt resolutions.”
Democrats Who Voted With Republicans
The nine Democrats who joined all Republicans in advancing the contempt motion against Bill Clinton were:
- Rep. Lateefah Simon (D-CA)
- Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL)
- Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL)
- Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA)
- Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA)
- Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI)
- Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM)
- Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA)
- Rep. Emily Randall (D-WA)
Reps. Lee, Stansbury, and Tlaib also voted to advance contempt proceedings against Hillary Clinton.
Reps. David Min (D-CA) and Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) voted “present” on the Bill Clinton motion, with Min also voting “present” on Hillary Clinton’s.
Why the Vote Matters
The committee is examining what the Clintons may have known about Epstein, including Bill Clinton’s documented travel aboard Epstein’s private jet, the so-called “Lolita Express,” during overseas trips in the early 2000s.
While Republicans acknowledge testimony may not produce dramatic revelations, they argue the issue is larger than any single witness.
Contempt of Congress carries potential penalties of up to $100,000 in fines and one year in prison if pursued by the Department of Justice.
For Republicans, the vote underscores a core principle: congressional subpoenas apply to everyone, including former presidents and politically powerful families.
That several Democrats, including figures normally hostile to GOP investigations, joined the vote only reinforced the seriousness of the matter, and marked a rare moment where party loyalty gave way to basic accountability.
