Actor Kiefer Sutherland Arrested in Hollywood, Accused of Assaulting Rideshare Driver

Actor Kiefer Sutherland, best known for his starring role on Fox’s hit series “24,” has been arrested following an alleged altercation with a rideshare driver in Los Angeles.

Sutherland, 59, was taken into custody early Monday morning after police responded to a report of an assault involving a rideshare driver shortly after midnight, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police say officers were dispatched to the area near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, where Sutherland had allegedly entered a rideshare vehicle, assaulted the driver, and then made threatening statements toward them.

The actor was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats, a felony charge that applies when an individual threatens to kill or cause serious bodily injury with the intent to place another person in fear.

Authorities said the rideshare driver did not suffer injuries requiring medical attention at the scene.

Sutherland was booked at approximately 4:23 a.m. at the LAPD’s Hollywood Division and was later released at 11:30 a.m., according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records.

He reportedly posted a $50,000 bond.

Detectives with the LAPD’s Hollywood Division are continuing to investigate the incident.

An initial court appearance has been scheduled for February 2.

The arrest was first reported by NBC4 Los Angeles.

The incident marks another legal issue for the actor, who has had prior run-ins with law enforcement.

In 2007, Sutherland pleaded no contest to a driving under the influence charge after failing a field sobriety test.

Because it was his second DUI conviction, following an earlier offense in 2004, he was sentenced to 48 days in jail.

In 2009, Sutherland was arrested for assault after allegedly head-butting fashion designer Jack McCollough at a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Those charges were later dropped after Sutherland issued a public apology, which McCollough accepted.

In a 2016 interview with People, Sutherland spoke candidly about his relationship with alcohol.

He acknowledged that several negative moments in his life were tied to excessive drinking.

However, he also stated that he did not view himself as someone who drank to escape personal problems.

Sutherland is the son of the late Donald Sutherland, the acclaimed film and television actor who died in June 2024 at the age of 88.
