African Migrant Arrested for Beheading Wife After German Media Hailed Him as ‘Model’ for ‘Integration Success’

A migrant from the African nation of Eritrea who was once celebrated by German media as a “model migrant” is now accused of beheading and dismembering his wife, in a case that has shocked the country.

Authorities say 41-year-old Asmerom G. is the prime suspect in the killing of his wife, 31-year-old Weghata A., the mother of his infant daughter.

Investigators say parts of her body were found along a German highway last year.

However, her head has still not been located.

German Media Once Praised Him as a Success Story

Nearly a decade ago, German newspapers portrayed Asmerom G. as a success story for migrant integration.

According to reports at the time, he arrived in Germany in 2013, claiming to have fled Eritrea due to political persecution.

In 2016, he was working as an electrical assistant at a company in Rheinbach, in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

German media outlets reported positively on his story, highlighting him as an example of how integration could succeed.

His employer reportedly described him as talented, reliable, and “capable of anything,” according to Bild.

Legal Trouble Followed Within a Year

However, within a year of the favorable coverage, Asmerom G. ran into trouble with the law.

He was involved in a violent altercation that led to a conviction for grievous bodily harm at Siegburg District Court.

The court sentenced him to six months in prison, suspended.

Afterward, he left Rheinbach and began working as a freight truck driver.

Marriage and Birth of Daughter

At some point after leaving his original job, Asmerom G. reportedly traveled back to Eritrea.

When he returned to Germany, he was accompanied by Weghata A., who was considered his wife under Eritrean law.

The couple later welcomed a daughter.

The case gained national attention after a disturbing discovery on November 17.

A driver traveling along Autobahn 45 near Olpe reported seeing something unusual along the roadside.

When police investigated, they discovered two severed women’s hands.

Forensic analysis later matched the fingerprints to Weghata A., who had already been reported missing from her asylum accommodation in Bonn, where she had been living with the couple’s infant daughter.

Days later, authorities located her torso.

Her head remains missing, according to investigators.

Infant Found Alive in Stroller

The day before the body parts were discovered, the couple’s baby had been found alive and unharmed.

The child was discovered in a stroller outside the Kröffelbach monastery in Waldsolms, located in the German state of Hesse.

A monk found the baby along with two handwritten notes listing only the child’s name and date of birth.

Suspect Arrested After Fleeing Germany

By the time investigators identified Asmerom G. as the primary suspect, he had already left Germany.

Authorities said he had boarded a flight to Ethiopia, where he was arrested in late November.

In early February, Ethiopian authorities extradited him back to Germany.

He is now being held in pre-trial detention as the investigation into the killing continues.
