Attorney General Pam Bondi has just confirmed that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has received a criminal referral from the House Judiciary Committee alleging former CIA Director John Brennan lied to Congress, marking a significant development in the long-running investigation tied to the origins of the Trump-Russia probe.
On Wednesday, Bondi acknowledged the referral while testifying before the committee in response to a direct question from Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) about whether Brennan would face indictment.
“What I can confirm is that we have received a referral from you, Chairman Jordan, to investigate John Brennan,” Bondi said.
She emphasized the department’s limits on public discussion of potential investigations but underscored a broader principle.
“His attorneys have made some public statements, but the department is still bound, of course, by our longstanding policy of not discussing matters,” Bondi said.
“What I will say today, I can’t confirm nor deny whether there’s a pending investigation, but what I will say [is] that no one is above the law.
“Weaponization has ended,” she declared.
Focus on Steele Dossier Testimony
Chairman Jordan’s October referral centers on Brennan’s testimony regarding the Steele dossier, a collection of fabricated claims about President Donald Trump, and the document’s role in the Obama-era Intelligence Community Assessment pushing allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The referral followed separate action by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who also urged the Justice Department to pursue prosecution related to broader conspiracy allegations tied to the probe.
According to prior reporting, a grand jury subpoenaed Brennan along with former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page as part of the DOJ investigation.
The subpoenas were issued from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, prompting Brennan’s legal team to accuse the department of seeking a favorable venue.
Democrats Push Back
Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) responded during the hearing by referencing past comments from President Trump about political opponents.
“If we want to know whether Mr. Brennan will be indicted, you should just ask the president,” Goldman said.
Trump previously addressed reports that Brennan and others were under federal investigation, offering a blunt assessment of the officials involved.
“Whatever happens, happens,” Trump said at the time.
“I think they’re very dishonest people.
“I think they’re crooked as hell.
“And, maybe they have to pay a price for that.”
Renewed Scrutiny of 2016 Probe Origins
The criminal referral and ongoing DOJ review signal intensifying scrutiny of intelligence and law-enforcement actions surrounding the 2016 election, an issue that has long reflected a politically motivated effort to undermine President Trump’s campaign and subsequent victory.
With the Justice Department now formally in receipt of the referral, attention is shifting to whether prosecutors will pursue charges against Brennan or others connected to the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation.
