A new WalletHub analysis ranking the “most sinful cities” in America is drawing attention, but not the kind most city governments want.
While officials typically highlight their climate, schools, economic growth, or quality of life, this report focuses instead on what WalletHub calls “the darkest corners of America.”
According to the survey, Las Vegas unsurprisingly topped the list as the nation’s No. 1 “most sinful city.”
It was followed by Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Atlanta.
Denver landed at No. 6 nationwide.
The placement was noted by Denver’s KDVR News, which reported the city’s high ranking.
Behind Denver were Miami, Dallas, Phoenix, and New Orleans.
WalletHub evaluated cities across seven behavioral categories: “anger & hatred,” “jealousy,” “excesses & vices,” “greed,” “lust,” “vanity,” and “laziness.”
Researchers used 37 data points, including violent crime, obesity rates, and even “online searches for illicit behavior.”
Denver Scored High in “Anger & Hatred” Metrics
The “anger & hatred” category included factors such as violent crime, bullying, hate groups, gun deaths, and mass shootings.
Denver scored particularly high in this area, a finding KDVR noted is “not a surprise” to many Colorado residents.
WalletHub’s ranking comes as Colorado continues facing national scrutiny for repeatedly targeting Christian individuals and organizations in high-profile legal battles.
The state has spent more than a decade litigating against Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop, even after losing at the U.S. Supreme Court.
The same is true of its attempt to force a Christian web designer to violate her beliefs, another case ultimately rejected by the Supreme Court.
Colorado officials are currently defending a policy that would restrict Christian counselors from making faith-based statements, and the state has faced lawsuits for trying to impose its radical gender ideology policies on a Christian children’s camp.
Most recently, Colorado was sued over alleged anti-Christian discrimination in its preschool program.
Denver Also Ranked No. 2 for “Excesses & Vices”
The survey’s “lust” category examined adult entertainment establishments, online searches for terms such as “XXX Entertainment” and “Tinder,” and teen birth rates.
In addition to its score on “anger & hatred,” Denver ranked No. 2 in the nation for excesses in drinking and vices, according to WalletHub’s evaluation of dozens of U.S. cities.
While the methodology focuses on statistical indicators rather than moral judgments, the findings place Denver among the nation’s most vice-heavy urban centers.
It’s a distinction unlikely to appear in any of the city’s tourism brochures.
