Radical Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has provoked a backlash in her district after she reportedly walked out of a town hall when a constituent asked her about surging crime in the area.
The constituent, Guadelupe Alvarez, says the Democrat congresswoman abruptly left a Bronx town hall after being asked about the deteriorating conditions in Jackson Heights, Queens.
She also revealed that AOC’s event was “scripted” and attendees were provided with pre-prepared questions for the congresswoman.
Alvarez, a resident in Ocasio-Cortez’s district, appeared on “Fox & Friends Sunday” to recount her experience at the event.
She claims that AOC dismissed her mid-question and never provided a response before walking out.
“I went to one of the town halls where she was speaking in the Bronx, I believe,” Alvarez said.
“I asked the question of, what are you doing for Jackson Heights?
“How are you aware of the crime and prostitution?
“Have you seen the neighborhood lately? She dismissed me.
“She said she’d be right back and never came back and just handed the floor to her assistant, which was really infuriating.”
Alvarez also said that the town hall appeared scripted.
She noted that attendees received pre-written questions that limited meaningful community engagement.
However, those who tried to ask questions that were not pre-approved were shunned.
“Not only that, we were given questions written by them,” she said.
“So it’s like our concerns weren’t really addressed until, like, someone had to speak up, and I had to be that person, and she still does nothing.
“So, we aren’t being heard, no matter how much we go out there.
“There’s no accountability on her part.”
WATCH:
The incident comes as Democratic Party leaders have launched a post-election outreach effort through a series of “People’s Town Halls” across the country.
The initiative is aimed at rebuilding support after the party lost ground in the 2024 elections.
Ocasio-Cortez has been part of that effort.
She also recently joined Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on a presidential election campaign-style national tour called “Fighting Oligarchy.”
However, as AOC travels to promote national policy platforms, crime in her own congressional district, which covers parts of Queens and the Bronx, has escalated sharply.
According to New York Police Department data, violent crime in the district has increased by 70% since AOC took office.
In Queens’ 110th precinct, which includes Jackson Heights, major crime is up by over 100%.
The congresswoman’s approach to immigration enforcement has also attracted criticism.
Earlier this year, Ocasio-Cortez confronted border czar Tom Homan during a town hall event in Jackson Heights.
AOC challenged Homan on federal immigration policies.
She later hosted a virtual session titled “Know Your Rights With ICE.”
During the webinar, AOC provided guidance to illegal aliens on how to avoid capture by immigration officers.
Her actions drew the attention of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
During an appearance on Fox News, Noem argued that it would be “entirely appropriate” for the Department of Justice to investigate the congresswoman’s comments.
As the Democratic Party continues to struggle with its post-election strategy to reconnect with voters, some constituents say their voices are still being ignored.
Voters’ concerns about issues of public safety and community quality of life are being overlooked by the Democrats.
