The Biden administration is trying to take credit for President Donald Trump’s landmark ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Former President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Antony Blinken attempted on Monday to insert themselves into the peace deal.
However, both men had failed to secure peace in the conflict that erupted during their time in office.
Biden, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, wrote on X that he was “deeply grateful and relieved” that the Gaza war is nearing its end.
“The road to this deal was not easy,” Biden claimed.
“My Administration worked relentlessly to bring hostages home, get relief to Palestinian civilians, and end the war.”
Biden added that Trump deserved some credit for getting the ceasefire “over the finish line,” before insisting the Middle East was now “on a path to peace” with the support of the United States and the international community.
Blinken: Trump Built on ‘Our Plan’
Blinken, who served as Biden’s secretary of state, went further, insisting that Trump’s 20-point peace framework was “based on one developed by the Biden administration.”
In a lengthy post, Blinken recounted that Arab states and Turkey had soured on Hamas and argued that Iran’s proxies, Hezbollah and the Houthis, were unwilling to come to the terror group’s defense.
He framed Trump’s accomplishment as an extension of “months of discussion” the Biden team supposedly had with Arab partners, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority.
“It starts with a clear and comprehensive post-conflict plan for Gaza,” Blinken wrote, praising Trump for “adopting and building on” what he claimed Biden’s administration had drafted.
Blinken reminded readers that Biden briefly brokered a ceasefire in January 2024 that freed 135 hostages, a deal that quickly collapsed.
He then questioned whether Trump could secure a lasting peace.
Trump Fires Back
When asked about Blinken’s remarks aboard Air Force One, Trump dismissed the claims outright.
“Everybody knows it’s a joke,” Trump said.
“Look, they did such a bad job.
“This should have never happened.”
Trump noted that Biden and Barack Obama’s failed foreign policy paved the way not only for the Hamas war but also for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“If just a decent president — not a great president like me — if a decent president were in, you wouldn’t have had the Russia-Ukraine [war],” Trump added.
‘We’ve Achieved the Impossible’
Trump, in Egypt on Monday for talks with more than 20 world leaders on the second phase of the ceasefire, declared the agreement a breakthrough moment.
“We’ve heard it for many years, but nobody thought it could ever get there. And now we’re there,” Trump said.
“This is the day that people across this region and around the world have been working, striving, hoping, and praying for.
“With the historic agreement we have just signed, those prayers of millions have finally been answered.
“Together, we have achieved the impossible.”
Competing Narratives
In his post, Blinken continued pressing the idea that Trump had validated “the key principles we established for Gaza at the outset of the war,” listing U.S. policy goals such as preventing terrorism, avoiding annexation, and supporting conditions for a potential “Palestinian state.”
But for many, the contrast is clear: Biden and Blinken presided over a Middle East in chaos, while Trump secured the deal that finally brought Hamas to the table.
