Bill Clinton Faces Contempt Charges After Skipping Congressional Deposition

Former President Bill Clinton appears to have defied a congressional subpoena Tuesday morning, failing to show up for a sworn deposition before the House Oversight Committee as part of its bipartisan investigation into disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Clinton had been compelled to testify behind closed doors at 10 a.m.

However, Clinton was not seen entering or leaving the committee room around the scheduled time.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) warned that Clinton’s failure to appear would trigger contempt of Congress proceedings.

“We will move next week in the House Oversight Committee … to hold Bill Clinton in contempt of Congress,” Comer said Tuesday morning.

Several lawmakers were seen entering the committee room, including Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Scott Perry (R-PA).

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was also subpoenaed to testify on Wednesday, is likewise not expected to appear.

An attorney representing the Clintons sent Comer a letter confirming that both are challenging the legality of the subpoenas.

“The Subpoenas issued to President and Secretary Clinton are invalid and legally unenforceable,” the letter states.

“Mindful of these defects, we trust you will engage in good faith to de-escalate this dispute.”

The Clintons argued that the subpoenas are “untethered to a valid legislative purpose,” seek information that is not pertinent, and represent “an unprecedented infringement on the separation of powers.”

They further claimed that the demand for testimony “runs afoul of the clearly defined limitations on Congress’s investigative power” as set forth by the Supreme Court.

The Clintons are accusing Republicans of using the investigation to “embarrass political rivals, as President Donald Trump has directed.”

In a separate statement, the Clintons accused Comer of obstructing the inquiry itself, alleging that he had “prevented progress in discovering the facts about the government’s role.”

“Bringing the Republicans’ cruel agenda to a standstill while you work harder to pass a contempt charge against us than you have done on your investigation this past year would be our contribution to fighting the madness,” they wrote.

The investigation has gained renewed attention as the U.S. Department of Justice continues releasing batches of Epstein-related files, despite a statutory deadline requiring full disclosure by December 19, 2025.

Some documents remain heavily redacted.

Previously released materials include photographs showing Clinton in the presence of Epstein’s victims, including images of the former president in a hot tub and swimming pool.

Last week, lawmakers asked a federal judge to appoint a special master to compel the Justice Department to release all remaining Epstein-related records, citing continued delays and incomplete compliance.

The Oversight Committee’s next steps are expected to determine whether Clinton will formally face contempt proceedings for refusing to appear.
