Billionaire Bill Gates has just launched an unprecedented new project that seeks to mass-vaccinate children around the world.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced this week a $1.6 billion funding commitment to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
The funding for Gavi, which was founded by Gates, is part of a global initiative to expand vaccination efforts in developing countries.
However, the scheme is drawing renewed scrutiny over vaccine safety and the foundation’s broader influence.
According to a press release, the foundation will distribute the funds over five years to Gavi, a public-private partnership focused on increasing vaccine coverage in “the world’s most vulnerable communities.”
The Gates Foundation described the pledge as part of a response to what it calls a “global crisis,” citing “rising child mortality” and a slowdown in international aid.
“The legacy of our generation cannot be that we looked away as millions of poor children died of preventable causes,” said Bill Gates.
“The world now has affordable, effective, proven tools that save lives.
“Wealthy nations should fully fund Gavi and the Global Fund, the organizations created to get those products to the people who need them.”
Today, we announced a $1.6 billion pledge to support @Gavi.
If Gavi isn’t fully funded, too many children could be left without the vaccines they need. Now more than ever, we must stand together to support immunization #ForOurFuture. https://t.co/Q54wAESqHm pic.twitter.com/Femu5M8QXV

The announcement comes amid declining global development budgets and shifting political priorities, particularly in the United States.
The Trump administration’s move to scale back USAID and eliminate certain foreign aid programs has disrupted funding pipelines that have historically supported global initiatives, including Gavi and similar international efforts.
The Gates Foundation’s release did not mention vaccine safety at all, however.
Yet, vaccine safety remains a central concern among critics of global immunization programs.
Gavi was founded by Gates in 2000.
The organization boasts that it has helped vaccinate over 1.1 billion children worldwide and claims to have prevented more than 17 million deaths.
Unsurprisingly, Gavi doesn’t support these claims with evidence or provide data for the number of children killed by vaccines.
The Gates Foundation says it has invested more than $30.6 billion in vaccines since 2000.
But opponents point to safety data, including figures from the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), which lists over 2.6 million reports of adverse events tied to vaccines since 1990.
A 2010 study from Harvard and HHS found that fewer than 1% of adverse events are reported, suggesting the actual number could be far higher.
The timing of the new pledge follows a controversial Gates-funded trial in South Africa, which exposed 260 children to a live bacterium from the tuberculosis family.
The study raised ethical questions among observers, especially in light of earlier Gates-backed research involving genetically modified tuberculosis strains designed for more aggressive growth.
Gates has long championed the role of vaccines in global health and development.
But critics have often cited a 2010 TED Talk in which he stated:
“If we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower [the world population] by, perhaps, 10 or 15 percent.”
While Gates has argued this refers to lowering child mortality and family sizes, the quote continues to circulate in discussions about global health policy and demographic planning.
In its announcement, the foundation also emphasized plans to expand its influence into other sectors, including digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, agriculture, education, and gender equality.
Last month, the foundation revealed plans to spend $200 billion over the next two decades before permanently closing its doors in 2045.
The decision is aimed at accelerating its global initiatives.
Despite its stated humanitarian goals, the Gates Foundation’s activities have drawn increasing skepticism from lawmakers, public health advocates, and policy watchdogs concerned about transparency, consent, and the long-term effects of mass vaccination campaigns.
