Billy Joel Reveals Brain Disorder Diagnosis, Cancels All Shows

Billy Joel has announced that he has been diagnosed with a rare brain disorder.

The “Uptown Girl” singer announced that he has cancelled all upcoming shows following the diagnosis.

The 76-year-old music star was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).

NPH affects vision, hearing, and balance.

According to Yale Medicine, it is a rare condition.

Joel’s social media accounts shared a statement with his fans.

“This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance,” the post read.

“Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.

“Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.

“He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.”

Joel concluded, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”

NPH is a condition that happens when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain.

“This condition is most likely to occur in people over 65.

“Treating this condition involves surgery to implant a shunt to drain excess fluid from the inside of the skull, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The “Piano Man” singer-songwriter’s concert cancellation comes months after he rescheduled several performances due to a “medical condition.”

This past March, a statement shared on his social media read:

“The current tour will be postponed for four months to allow him to recover from recent surgery and to undergo physical therapy under the supervision of his doctors.

“Joel is expected to make a full recovery.

“The tour will resume at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on July 5, 2025.”

At the time, Joel shared a personal comment, writing:

“While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first.

“I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

Joel’s wife, Alexis Roderick, previously commented her husband’s health challenges.

“He’s doing well,” she said in March.

“It’s funny, I was just having this conversation the other day.

“He’s going to be 76. And I don’t think of him that way.

“People don’t think of him in that way, but he is.

“And he’s been doing this job nonstop for 15 years — just this recent run.”

“Sometimes your health has to take priority, and things have to get postponed,” she continued.

“But really, in the grand scheme of things, he’s a healthy person, and he’s well and working on himself, trying to get better and do what he has to do medically.

“So it’s important, you know, we need him around so he has to do what he has to do.”

Roderick and Joel share daughters, Della and Remy.

Joel is also the father of daughter Alexa Ray, whom he shares with his ex-wife Christie Brinkley.

During Joel’s performance on February 22 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, the singer-songwriter tripped on stage.

He fell after tossing his mic stand to a crew member at the end of “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” but he quickly recovered, according to Rolling Stone.

In 2024, Joel released “Turn the Lights Back On,” his first new single since 2007.

That same year, he ended his 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden.
