Boston’s far-left Democrat Mayor Michelle Wu has made it clear that she has no intention of following New York City’s incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdani in striking a cooperative tone with President Donald Trump.
Responding to Mamdani’s recent White House meeting with Trump, Wu dismissed the idea of any political “bromance” with the administration.
“I’m not interested in a bromance with the federal regime,” Wu told reporters, according to The New York Times, which obtained audio of her remarks.
Her comments came days after Mamdani met with President Trump at the White House, a meeting that surprised many, given the sharp rhetoric Mamdani has used against the president.
However, during their White House meeting, Mamdani appeared to abandon his aggressive anti-Trump rhetoric while face-to-face with the president.
Following their conversation, Trump described Mamdani as a “rational person” and emphasized shared goals for improving New York City.
Wu, by contrast, signaled she intends to keep her distance.
“From my point of view, flattery is not the way,” she said, according to the Boston Globe.
“I think Boston residents want to stand strong on our values and to get things done and to keep moving forward, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do.”
Mamdani Returns to Trump Rhetoric After Meeting
A spokeswoman for Mamdani declined to respond directly to Wu, instead pointing reporters back to Mamdani’s earlier remarks that he still views Trump as a “threat to democracy.”
According to the Times, Mamdani said it is nevertheless his responsibility to work with “everyone and anyone” if doing so improves residents’ lives.
Despite a cordial White House meeting, Mamdani told NBC’s Kristen Welker on Sunday that he still believed the president was a “fascist.”
“Everything that I’ve said in the past, I continue to believe,” he said.
The remark will likely surprise many as Mamdani was asked, as he stood next to the president in the Oval Office, whether he believes Trump is a “fascist.”
He declined to respond.
Wu Continues Attacks on Trump Over Immigration, Law Enforcement
Wu has long been a vocal critic of the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts and has repeatedly defended Boston’s sanctuary policies.
She used Monday’s press exchange to take fresh shots at the federal government.
“If it came with a promise to stop snatching residents illegally off the streets, stop prosecuting his political enemies, stop cutting life-saving research and funding?” Wu said.
“Sure, I would be open to a conversation at that point.”
Wu previously escalated her criticism in August, accusing the administration of being a party that “doesn’t follow the law.”
“At a time when this federal administration is already causing so much fear and harm in our communities, these threats are serious and consequential,” she said at the time.
“Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures.
“Unlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law…
“You are wrong on the law, and you are wrong on safety.”
Mamdani and Trump Signal Areas of Agreement Despite Harsh Words
After the Oval Office meeting, Mamdani said he “appreciated” the discussion with Trump.
He noted that the president was honest about differences while willing to focus on shared goals related to affordability and housing.
“We have one thing in common,” Trump said Friday.
“We want this city of ours that we love to do very well.”
