Canada Caves to Trump on New American Tech Company Tax

Canada abruptly pulled the plug on its controversial digital services tax on American technology companies.

The move comes just hours after President Donald Trump cut off trade negotiations in a bold move to defend American tech firms and hold Ottawa accountable for its trade abuses.

In a Sunday post on Truth Social, Trump blasted Canada’s proposed tax as a direct attack on U.S. technology giants like Amazon, Google, and Meta.

“We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with… has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country,” the president wrote.

Trump also took aim at Canada’s history of gouging American farmers.

He noted that Ottawa has slapped U.S. dairy products with tariffs as high as 400%.

This is a trade imbalance that Trump has fought to correct since Day One of his presidency.

“They are obviously copying the European Union,” Trump added, “which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also.”

Within hours of Trump’s warning shot, Canada caved.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a complete reversal.

Carney said his government would support “a resumption of negotiations toward the July 21, 2025, timeline set out at this month’s G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis.”

The digital tax, which would have been retroactive to 2022 and applied a 3% levy to major U.S. companies, was set to begin Monday.

Canadian officials had previously refused to back down, even amid warnings from Washington.

But after Trump’s decisive action, Ottawa changed its tune.

Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne tried to spin the backpedal as a positive step toward broader cooperation:

“Rescinding the digital services tax will allow the negotiations of a new economic and security relationship with the United States to make vital progress.”

But the message was clear: when Trump draws a line, countries listen.

Under Trump’s America First agenda, no foreign nation, ally or otherwise, gets a free ride when it comes to unfair trade practices.

Whether it’s slapping tariffs on Chinese steel or calling out European bureaucrats for overregulation, Trump has consistently defended U.S. jobs, sovereignty, and industry from global overreach.

This latest victory over Canada is just the latest example of what putting America First really looks like.

And under Trump’s leadership, American workers and businesses know they have someone willing to fight for them, no matter who’s on the other side of the table.
