The European Union (EU) is pushing a sweeping new policy that would allow children of any age to legally “change their gender” and punish member nations that refuse to comply.
The unelected European Commission’s “LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy 2026–2030” was unveiled on Wednesday.
It calls for eliminating age limits and medical safeguards, declaring it will “support the development of legal gender recognition procedures based on self-determination that are free from age restrictions.”
The plan would also ban so-called “talking therapy,” counseling intended to help children struggling with gender issues.
In addition, the globalist Commission is threatening to cut funding from regions that resist the EU’s ideological agenda.
Critics say the proposals represent a radical escalation of gender ideology in European law.
Concerns are growing that eurocrats will use the laws to override parental rights and silence women’s concerns.
‘A Chilling, Sinister Strategy’
Maya Forstater, chief executive of the U.K.-based group Sex Matters, blasted the proposals as dangerous.
“This chilling EU-wide strategy pushes legal gender self-identification for children of any age and a ban on talking therapy for vulnerable children,” Forstater told The Telegraph.
“It is a mercy that British campaigners for sex-based rights don’t have to deal with this sinister strategy and the pernicious capture of EU institutions, on top of our own challenges in the U.K.”
The Athena Forum, a European women’s rights coalition, also condemned the proposals, warning that women are being “silenced” by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels.
Punishing Dissent
The Commission made clear that member states that refuse to adopt self-ID laws could face penalties.
“Discriminating regions” that refuse to obey the radical gender policies, by instead relying on biological facts, could lose access to EU funding under the new laws.
The move is effectively strong-arming sovereign governments into submission.
At present, just 9 of the EU’s 27 member states allow gender self-identification.
Twelve require medical procedures, and the rest impose other restrictions.
The new proposal seeks to erase those barriers completely.
A Global Trend and Growing Pushback
Although the new laws would only apply to EU member states, experts are warning that the policies could impact neighboring nations that are not under the bloc’s rule.
In the U.K., children as young as 16 can already access gender-transition hormones, though they cannot officially change their medical records until 18.
Critics warn the EU plan would take this even further, stripping away parental oversight and medical safeguards altogether.
Sex-based rights groups argue the strategy will harm women and girls, erase protections for female-only spaces, and put vulnerable children at risk of irreversible medical harm.
“This is not equality,” Forstater said.
“It’s ideology imposed at the expense of women, children, and basic biological reality.”
