Bill and Hillary Clinton have lashed out at House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) as the Democrat power-couple faces contempt of Congress charges for ignoring congressional subpoenas for depositions in the Jeffrey Epstein investigations.
A top spokesman for Bill Clinton accused Comer of misrepresenting negotiations in the House investigation tied to convicted child sex offender Epstein.
It comes as the committee moves toward a potential contempt vote over the Clintons’ failure to appear for scheduled depositions.
Angel UreƱa, deputy chief of staff to Bill Clinton, claimed the dispute is being framed around testimony format as a pretext for contempt proceedings.
He insists that the Clintons never rejected sworn testimony or an official transcript.
UreƱaās remarks came after Comer accused the Clintons of defying bipartisan subpoenas and demanding limits that would bar other lawmakers and prevent an official record.
āWe never said no to a transcript,ā UreƱa wrote on X.
“Interviews are on the record and under oath.
āWhether it was written or typed isnāt why this is happening.
“If that were the last or only issue, weād be in a different position.
“You keep misdirecting to protect you-know-who, and God knows what.ā
Comer disputed that account, saying the Clintonsā attorneys offered what he described as an unacceptable arrangement as the committee advanced toward contempt.
āFacing contempt of Congress, the Clintonsā lawyers made an untenable offer: that I travel to New York for a conversation with President Clinton only,ā Comer wrote on X.
āNo official transcript would be recorded, and other members of Congress would be barred from participating.
“I have rejected the Clintonsā ridiculous offer.ā
Comer also accused the Clintons of seeking special treatment and failing to comply with lawful subpoenas.
āThe Clintonsā latest demands make clear they believe their last name entitles them to special treatment,ā he wrote.
āThe House Oversight Committeeās bipartisan subpoenas require the Clintons to appear for depositions that are under oath and transcribed.ā
The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is examining what the Clintons may have known about Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, including scrutiny of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. anti-trafficking efforts during her tenure at the State Department.
Comer argued that proceeding without a formal record would undermine transparency as the investigation moves forward.
āThe absence of an official transcript is an indefensible demand that is insulting to the American people who demand answers about Epsteinās crimes,ā he wrote.
The Republican-led Oversight Committee responded to UreƱaās claims on X and posted what it said were communications between the parties, with names redacted.
āOne of the Clintonās pawns claimed to the fake NYT that they never ruled out a transcript,ā the committee wrote.
āThe receipts tell a different storyāthey demanded that there be only one staffer āto take notesā for each side during an āinterview.ā
“Subpoenas and depositions are not suggestions.ā
Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX), who serves on the Oversight Committee, said the panel tried to accommodate the Clintons but was left with little choice but to pursue contempt.
āWeāve seen multiple pictures of Bill Clinton with Epstein victims on Epsteinās plane engaged in all kinds of things that look quite unsavory, and I think the American people want answers, and they want to know what a former U.S. president was doing with this disgusting pedophile,ā Rep. Gill said.
The committee is expected to proceed with a contempt vote as the investigation continues.
