New reporting suggests comedian and television host Conan O’Brien intervened to stop party guests at his Los Angeles–area home from calling police on Nick Reiner during a heated confrontation just hours before Reiner’s parents, famed Hollywood director Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, were found stabbed to death.
According to the Daily Mail, multiple sources say tensions erupted at O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday night when Nick Reiner clashed with his father.
“They got in an argument, the father and son,” one source told the outlet.
“It got so bad and loud [that] someone wanted to call the police to report it.”
“But Conan stepped in and said, ‘It’s my house, my party, I’m not calling the police.’ He talked them out of calling the police,” the source added.
A second source backed the account, telling reporters that several attendees believed Nick might need to be placed on a psychiatric hold.
“When the s*** was hitting the fan, somebody said, ‘We need to call the police.’ The conversation was about getting this kid put into a mental-health hold,” the source said.
“It makes sense; who wants the cops showing up creating a scene?
“But the argument between Rob and Nick was pretty intense.”
Hours after the party, the bodies of Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered by their daughter Romy at the couple’s home.
Both had been stabbed and had their throats slashed.
Nick Reiner, 32, has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is currently on suicide watch.
Rob Reiner Expressed Fear of His Son Earlier That Night
Additional reporting from Page Six indicates Rob Reiner told others at the party he was fearful of his son’s behavior.
“I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I’m afraid of my son,” he allegedly said.
“I think my own son can hurt me.”
Other attendees reported feeling unsettled by Nick’s demeanor that evening, including comedian Bill Hader.
“Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous,” one insider told People.
Mental Health Concerns Raised in Days Before Murders
According to TMZ, Nick had been diagnosed with schizophrenia only weeks before the killings and had recently begun a new medication that allegedly made him “erratic and dangerous.”
The outlet reported the treatment had driven him “out of his head.”
Prosecutors have not yet released a detailed timeline of events leading up to the murders, and investigators have not commented on what role the party confrontation may play in the broader case.
The investigation remains ongoing.
