Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez has declared that the communist regime would defend itself “to the last drop of blood” before making a deal with the United States.
Bermúdez responded defiantly to pressure from President Donald Trump, who urged Havana to strike a deal with Washington.
Trump addressed Cuba earlier in the day in a Truth Social post, warning the regime to negotiate while it still can and signaling a dramatic shift in U.S. policy toward the island.
“They make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE,” Trump wrote.
Bermúdez reacted with a series of posts on X, blaming the island’s economic collapse on U.S. sanctions rather than decades of communist mismanagement.
“Those who blame the Revolution for the severe economic shortages we suffer should hold their tongues out of shame,” Díaz-Canel wrote, according to an English translation of his Spanish-language post.
“Because they know it and acknowledge it: they are the fruit of the draconian measures of extreme strangulation that the U.S. has been applying to us for six decades and now threatens to surpass.”
In a second post, the Cuban leader escalated his rhetoric further.
“#Cuba is a free, independent, and sovereign nation,” he wrote.
“No one dictates what we do.
“Cuba does not aggress; it is aggressed upon by the United States for 66 years, and it does not threaten; it prepares, ready to defend the Homeland to the last drop of blood.”
Trump Cuts Off Lifeline to Havana
Trump, however, made clear that Cuba’s longtime economic lifeline through Venezuela is coming to an end.
“Cuba lived, for many years, on large amounts of OIL and MONEY from Venezuela,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“In return, Cuba provided ‘Security Services’ for the last two Venezuelan dictators, BUT NOT ANYMORE!”
Trump said the recent U.S. operation in Venezuela had fundamentally altered the regional balance of power.
“Most of those Cubans are DEAD from last week’s U.S.A. attack, and Venezuela doesn’t need protection anymore from the thugs and extortionists who held them hostage for so many years,” he continued.
He added that Venezuela now has the backing of the United States.
“Venezuela now has the United States of America, the most powerful military in the World (by far!), to protect them, and protect them we will,” Trump wrote.
“THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA – ZERO!
“I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.”
Cuban-American Lawmaker Fires Back
Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), who was born in Cuba and fled the island after the communist takeover, responded forcefully to Bermúdez’s remarks.
“You dictators, henchmen, and executioners of the Cuban nation think you own the island,” Gimenez wrote in Spanish, according to a translation. “You don’t have much time left.”
Gimenez later thanked Trump directly, tying the president’s actions to the broader fight against communism in the Western Hemisphere.
“I was born in Cuba & forced from home shortly after the Communist takeover,” Gimenez wrote on X.
“Today, I represent my community in Congress.
“Thank you, President Trump, first Venezuela & next is Cuba. We will be forever grateful.
“Our hemisphere must be the hemisphere of liberty.”
The exchange underscores escalating tensions between Washington and Havana as Trump signals that the era of propping up hostile communist regimes in the region is over and that Cuba may be next.
