The Democrats’ internal party divisions appear to be deepening after radical gun control activist David Hogg was voted out of his leadership role at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) last month.
However, many younger Democrats are now calling Hogg’s departure a step in the right direction for a party in search of identity.
As Slay News reported, the DNC voted to remove Hogg as vice chair in May and called for new elections.
The move came after Hogg reportedly planned to spend millions backing progressive primary challengers against what he viewed as “ineffective” incumbents in Congress.
The decision has stirred both praise and frustration within the party’s younger ranks.
Some see Hogg’s removal as an opportunity to double down on aggressive primary challenges targeting establishment Democrats.
Many of those older Democrats are viewed as out of touch with the radical progressive base that Higg appeals to.
Hogg hinted at this strategy in a post on social media after the stunning primary victory of Zohran Mamdani in New York City’s mayoral race, writing:
“It’s gonna be a fun next couple years.”
He also took aim at Democrats who had supported former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, saying they should be primaried.
Even before Mamdani’s upset win, many progressive Democrats saw Hogg’s ouster as potentially energizing.
His organization, Leaders We Deserve, has been backing young progressive candidates across the country in a bid to overhaul the party’s establishment base.
But as some on the far-left look to reshape the party, others are walking away from it altogether.
In 2024, Audrey McNeal, a 22-year-old elected DNC delegate, announced she was quitting the Democratic Party and endorsing President Donald Trump.
Her decision, reported by Breitbart, was grounded in what she called a betrayal of core constitutional values.
“You see, after I was elected in March, I wanted answers on free speech, the border, and the economy,” McNeal said.
“But reflecting on my time at the DNC, I realized it was no longer the party of free speech and civil liberties it used to be.”
She condemned what she described as an opaque power grab by Democrat leadership, citing their move to install Kamala Harris as the 2024 presidential nominee by bypassing millions of voters and even their own delegates.
“That was a transaction that was concealed,” she said.
“And now I’m happy to say that I’m officially joining the Republican Party as a constitutional conservative.”
The timing of Hogg’s removal comes as Democrats face growing signs of political instability and deep ideological fractures.
According to a CBS News poll cited by Breitbart, a majority of Democrat voters report feeling “frustrated” with their party’s handling of President Donald Trump’s leadership.
The Democrat base is clearly restless, the leadership is divided, and the party’s brand is suffering.
“All of this comes as internal polling shows the Democrat Party is in a complete brand collapse,” A CBS News report concluded.
