Under President Donald Trump’s federal crime crackdown in Washington, D.C., as the nation’s capital recorded its 12th straight day without a homicide, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced Monday.
In addition, Pirro revealed that the operation has just seen arrests in D.C. blow past 1,000.
Pirro said that on Sunday alone, authorities made 86 arrests and seized 10 illegal guns.
The news brings the totals to 1,007 arrests and 111 firearms taken off the streets since Trump’s “Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful” initiative launched earlier this month.
“What does that mean?” Pirro said on “Fox & Friends.”
“They can’t be used to shoot people, to kill people.
“And on top of all of that, we’ve got a government now where the people in D.C. are feeling safer.
“They know that there is a president who’s looking to protect them.”
Pirro credited Trump’s decision to deploy federal agencies and seize temporary control of the Metropolitan Police Department with reshaping public safety in the nation’s capital.
“D.C. was one of the most violent cities in the world, but for President Trump coming in and bringing in our federal partners … we’ve got a unified force of people and law enforcement who were going into the crime-ridden areas and making a difference,” Pirro said.
She pointed to the homicide-free streak as proof:
“So far this year, we’ve had 101 homicides.
“But for the last 12 days, nothing.
“Yep. Policing works.”
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that 26 of Sunday’s arrests stemmed from FBI operations, including five drug seizures.
“Keep getting after it,” Patel posted on X.
While the results in Washington are drawing praise from residents, Democrats in other cities are pushing back.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson dismissed the initiative, claiming only nine arrests had been made under the crackdown and vowing to resist any federal expansion to Chicago.
Pirro fired back, saying Johnson should “hope that the president comes there to clean up the mess.”
“The good news is that [criminals] are afraid to commit crimes when you have an increased law enforcement presence in the community,” she said.
“They’re saying thank you.
“They’re afraid to commit crimes because they know they’ll be held accountable.”
WATCH:
Chicago, run by Democrats for decades, continues to lead the nation in homicides, recording 573 killings in 2024 alone, according to city figures.
The city has topped the nation in homicides for 13 straight years.
As part of his crackdown, Trump on Monday signed an executive order instructing police in D.C. to charge suspects with federal crimes and hold them in federal custody to avoid local cashless bail policies.
Another order threatens to revoke federal funding from jurisdictions nationwide that use cashless bail, a measure long criticized by conservatives as fueling repeat violent crime.
The president has also authorized National Guard units in Washington to carry firearms while on patrol.
Troops were seen armed on the streets of the capital over the weekend.
The operation began quietly on August 7 but escalated on August 11, when Trump invoked emergency powers in the Home Rule Act to temporarily seize federal control of the D.C. police department, a first in U.S. history.
Alongside the National Guard and FBI, the effort has enlisted a wide range of federal agencies, including the U.S. Marshals, ATF, DEA, Capitol Police, and Park Police, all coordinating with local officers to sweep up gang members, robbery suspects, and illegal immigrants fueling violent crime.
