Law enforcement across Los Angeles County is grieving the loss of 28-year-old Alhambra Police Officer Alec Sanders, who was killed in the line of duty early Thursday morning.
Sanders died after a police pursuit ended in a devastating collision.
The deadly incident unfolded around 3 a.m. as Alhambra officers attempted to stop an SUV with three suspects, according to FOX 11 Los Angeles.
During the pursuit, the suspects’ vehicle crashed head-on into Sanders’ patrol SUV.
The collision had such force that a female suspect was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The front of Sanders’ patrol vehicle was completely crushed, its airbags deployed, and the officer was found unconscious and not breathing inside.
He was rushed to Los Angeles General Medical Center, located roughly four miles away.
Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead several hours later despite efforts to save him.
Alhambra Police Chief Garrett Kennedy revealed that Sanders had volunteered to cover an overnight shift for another officer that night.
Colleagues say that the decision epitomized his selfless nature.
In a statement posted to Facebook, the department described Sanders as “a dedicated public servant, a trusted partner, and a caring friend.”
“He was known for his unwavering reliability and deep sense of discipline both on and off duty, leaving a lasting impact on those who served alongside him,” the department wrote.
“He answered the call to serve and protect, and he did so with honor, integrity, and courage.
“His sacrifice will forever be remembered.”
Sanders joined the Alhambra Police Department in April 2025.
He had previously been serving with the Long Beach Police Department for one year.
A solemn procession later accompanied his body from the hospital to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Footage captured by FOX 11 showed dozens of officers walking behind the transport van, with police and fire personnel lining the street in silence to pay their respects.
Sanders leaves behind his fiancée, his parents, and two younger siblings.
“We ask that you keep his family, loved ones, and our department in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the department wrote.
“We sincerely appreciate the overwhelming support from our law enforcement partners and community members.
“Thank you for standing with us as we honor Officer Sanders’ life and service.”
