Democratic Party leaders in Congress have accused President Donald Trump of inciting political violence after he blasted six Democrat lawmakers for releasing a viral video urging military and intelligence personnel to “refuse illegal orders.”
The lawmakers, all of whom have military or intelligence backgrounds, were:
- Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI)
- Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ)
- Rep. Maggie Goodlander (D-NH)
- Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA)
- Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO)
- Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA)
Their video told service members:
“You can refuse illegal orders.
“You must refuse illegal orders.”
WATCH:
The clip was immediately condemned by conservatives as an outrageous appeal for military defiance toward the commander-in-chief.
Trump called it what many on the Right saw as a veiled call for a military coup.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote that the Democrats’ message represented “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!!” and said such actions are “punishable by DEATH.”
He also reposted a user who wrote: “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!!”
Democrats reacted with full-blown panic.
Schumer Accuses Trump of Calling for Lawmakers’ Executions
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) stood on the Senate floor to accuse President Trump of explicitly threatening members of Congress.
“He is calling for the execution of elected officials,” Schumer claimed.
“Every time Donald Trump posts things like this, he makes political violence more likely.”
Schumer went further, insisting Trump is “lighting a match in a country soaked with political gasoline.”
Jeffries Declares Trump a Danger; Contacts Capitol Police
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) issued a joint statement with Democrat leadership accusing Trump of issuing “disgusting and dangerous death threats” against Congress.
Jeffries said Democrats had already contacted the House Sergeant-at-Arms and U.S. Capitol Police, warning that Trump’s rhetoric could “get someone killed.”
“Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged social media posts and recant his violent rhetoric,” Jeffries said.
Republicans dismissed the hysteria as political theater, noting the obvious context that Trump’s remarks were a rhetorical condemnation of what many saw as a stunningly irresponsible video encouraging members of the military to disobey their commander-in-chief.
GOP: Democrats Sparked This With Their Own Video
The backlash against the Democrats began after their Tuesday video called for service members to resist “illegal” orders, without defining what they meant, what “illegal” refers to, or who determines it.
The video was widely viewed as a call for a military coup against the sitting president.
The Trump administration pointed out that the lawmakers themselves are attempting to undermine the chain of command during a time when the U.S. military is conducting authorized anti-narcoterror operations in the Caribbean and when National Guard troops are deployed to high-crime blue cities at governors’ requests.
War Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed the video as “Stage 4 TDS.”
Other Republicans noted the hypocrisy of Democrats who spent years insisting that questioning military orders during the Trump administration amounted to extremism, yet are now openly encouraging it.
Democrat Concerns Rise After Multiple Acts of Political Violence
The fight comes amid a spike in political violence nationwide, including:
- Two attempted assassinations of President Trump
- The assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk
- A sharp rise in threats against members of Congress
Democrats insist Trump’s words are dangerous.
Republicans counter that the only truly dangerous act was Democrats telling the military to selectively ignore commands from their lawful commander-in-chief.
