Democrat Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) launched a heated attack on Republicans from the House floor Wednesday, denouncing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act and accusing supporters of advancing what she called “racist, misogynistic trash.”
The SAVE Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship and valid photo identification to vote in federal elections.
Republicans say these measures are essential to protecting election integrity and ensuring only citizens cast ballots.
Most Americans, including Democrat voters, agree that voter ID laws should be passed.
However, Democrat lawmakers are desperate to block such laws from passing.
Ramirez rejected arguments favoring voter ID outright, targeting GOP lawmakers during her remarks.
“Look, as I hear my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, what I hear is the same racist, misogynistic trash, different decade,” Ramirez said.
“Republicans are invoking historical policies intended, let’s be clear, to disenfranchise Americans, especially working people, women, students, indigenous people, and anyone who can’t afford the burdens of a new bill.”
She escalated further, claiming the legislation is designed to silence political opposition.
“The SAVE America Act is yet another Republican attempt to intimidate and suppress the votes of anyone, anyone who threatens their extremist white supremacist agenda,” Ramirez added.

Election Integrity Safeguard
Republicans backing the SAVE Act argue the proposal establishes basic citizenship verification and voter identification standards widely supported by American voters, positioning the measure as a necessary defense against unlawful voting and election irregularities.

The measure is a necessary defense against unlawful voting and election irregularities.
The legislative fight intensified earlier this month when several House Republicans sought to attach the bill to a government funding package.
President Donald Trump urged lawmakers to pass the spending measure cleanly, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) signaled support.
Thune said he plans to bring the legislation to the Senate floor after committee review.
Senate Democrats Continue Blocking Measure
Despite passing the House last April, the SAVE Act has remained stalled in the Senate for nine months after Democrats refused to advance it, using the chamber’s 60-vote threshold to halt the election-integrity proposal along with other conservative priorities this Congress.
Ramirez’s floor speech underscores the intensity of Democrat resistance to voter ID and citizenship verification requirements.
Meanwhile, Republicans note that the issue is fundamental to maintaining trust in American elections.
With the legislation still blocked in the Senate, the clash over the SAVE Act reflects a broader national divide over whether safeguarding ballot access should prioritize expanded participation, or strict enforcement ensuring only eligible citizens vote.
