Democrats Outraged After Senate Votes to End Schumer’s Shutdown

The Senate reached a late-Sunday breakthrough to begin reopening the federal government after eight Democrats crossed the aisle to join Republicans and secure the 60 votes needed to advance a continuing resolution.

Despite finally ending the record-breaking government shutdown, the move has immediately set off a furious backlash from the Left.

Democrat leaders blasted the deal, insisting the resolution ignores what they describe as a worsening “healthcare crisis.”

In public statements, Democrats shamed the Democratic Party defectors for handing President Donald Trump a significant legislative victory.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) delivered one of the night’s most heated reactions, labeling the bill a “Republican-made healthcare crisis.”

“America is in the midst of a Republican-made healthcare crisis — a crisis so severe, so urgent, and so devastating for American families that I cannot support a continuing resolution that fails to address it,” Schumer said.

He claimed that Democrats have been trying “for months and months” to push healthcare reforms and vowed to continue opposing the measure.

“This bill does nothing to ensure that the crisis is addressed. I am voting no, and I will keep fighting for months and months.”

“Very, Very Bad Vote”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) slammed not only Republicans, but the eight Democrats who sided with them.

“Tonight, eight Democrats voted with the Republicans to allow them to go forward on this continuing resolution,” Sanders said.

“And to my mind, this was a very, very bad vote.”

Sanders claimed the measure will raise healthcare premiums dramatically and warned it will “pave the way” for millions to lose Medicaid coverage.

“It raises healthcare premiums for over 20 million Americans…

“It paves the way for 15 million people to be thrown off of Medicaid…

“And all of that was done to give a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the 1%.”

He also framed the vote as contradicting recent election results.

“What the election showed is that the American people wanted us to stand up to Trumpism…

“But tonight, that is not what happened.”

More Democrats Join the Chorus

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) denounced the bill as doing “NOTHING” to address healthcare affordability for Californians.

“Millions of Californians are at risk of losing their insurance or facing dramatically higher health care costs,” he said.

“Tonight’s vote does NOTHING to address this Republican health care crisis.”

Schiff released a video from outside the Capitol in the rain, describing his “no” vote.

“It’s dark and raining, and that seems all too appropriate… that funding bill has nothing in it to help people afford their health insurance…

“We owe our constituents better than this.”

Vote Makes Trump “Stronger, Not Weaker”

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) warned that the vote would embolden President Trump.

In a post on X, Murphy’s caption read:

“I got back to my office after the vote tonight and recorded this.

“There’s no way to sugarcoat what happened tonight.

“And my fear is that Trump gets stronger, not weaker, because of this acquiescence.”

Murphy urged Democrats to continue resisting.

“The American people do not want Democrats to be bullied into submission,” he said.

“They want Democrats to fight for their healthcare.

“They want Democrats to fight Trump’s illegality.”

He suggested hard moments were inevitable.

“I didn’t want this shutdown,” Murphy declared.

“I want it to end — but not at any cost… I’m angry about it.

“And I’m just gonna get up tomorrow and go to work to try to convince all of my colleagues that this is a unique moment — and the necessity to stand and fight… is necessary.”
