Denmark Suggests Progress Made in Greenland Talks with Trump Admin

Representatives from the Danish government and Greenland met with senior officials from the Trump administration to discuss the future of Greenland.

It comes amid President Donald Trump’s renewed push for U.S. control of the Arctic territory.

The meeting took place on Wednesday at the White House in Washington, D.C., and lasted approximately one hour.

Representing the United States were Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who hosted the discussions.

Denmark was represented by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, while Greenland was represented by Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt.

The talks were initiated by Denmark following repeated statements from President Trump asserting that U.S. control of Greenland is necessary for American national security.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump reiterated his position on Truth Social, writing that U.S. control of Greenland is “vital” to his proposed Golden Dome air and missile defense system.

He echoed that stance during an Oval Office appearance the same day, stating that acquiring Greenland is “very important” for the United States.

Trump has previously said, “One way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland,” and has described any outcome short of U.S. control as “unacceptable.”

He has also argued that “NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES.”

The remarks build on Trump’s interest during his first term, when he publicly floated purchasing Greenland in 2019 and later canceled a planned visit to Denmark after Copenhagen rejected the idea outright.

The Danish government has consistently opposed any transfer of sovereignty.

Rasmussen has said Denmark rejects proposals that fail to respect Greenland’s right to self-determination.

Greenlandic leaders have echoed that position, with Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen previously stating:

“If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark.”

Despite the firm opposition, officials characterized Wednesday’s talks as constructive.

Rasmussen said the meeting allowed Denmark to “challenge the narrative presented by the American president.”

While no agreement was reached on the core issue of sovereignty, the parties agreed to establish a high-level working group to continue discussions.

The group is expected to focus on areas such as economic development, intelligence cooperation, and military presence on the island, while addressing U.S. security concerns.

Rasmussen acknowledged, however, that a “fundamental disagreement” remains.

“We have a fundamental disagreement, but we also agree to disagree, and therefore we will, however, continue to talk,” Rasmussen said.

Motzfeldt expressed a similar view, emphasizing Greenland’s autonomy.

Following the meeting, Trump again affirmed that U.S. control of Greenland is essential to American security interests.

The talks mark the first senior-level engagement between the Trump administration, Denmark, and Greenland since the president returned to office and revived his interest in the territory.

They come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Arctic, where the United States has moved to expand its presence in response to growing activity from Russia and China.

No additional follow-up actions beyond the creation of the working group have been announced.
