The Pentagon is now monitoring the social media activity of service members and Department of War employees after disturbing posts surfaced celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
The 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was murdered this week at Utah Valley University.
War Chief Pete Hegseth announced Thursday that his department would hold accountable anyone under its authority who mocked or cheered Kirk’s death.
“We are tracking all these very closely — and will address, immediately,” Hegseth posted.
“Completely unacceptable.”

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell reinforced the message:
“It is unacceptable for military personnel and Department of War civilians to celebrate or mock the assassination of a fellow American.
“The Department of War has zero tolerance for it.”
Outrage Over Mockery of Kirk’s Death
The crackdown comes after waves of ghoulish posts on social media openly mocking Kirk’s assassination.
One of the most prominent came from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who used an interview to bash Kirk’s legacy just one day after his murder.
Omar accused the conservative leader of having “downplayed” the death of George Floyd and slavery in America.
She sneered that Kirk said, “Juneteenth should never exist.”
While she claimed to have “empathy” for Kirk’s wife and children, Omar made clear she had no sympathy for the conservative activist himself.
Other left-wing figures have already faced consequences.
Former Middle Tennessee State University associate dean Laura Sosh-Lightsy posted:
“Looks like ol’ Charlie spoke his fate into existence.
“Hate begets hate. ZERO sympathy.”
She was promptly fired on Wednesday.
Florida Vows To Act Against Educators
The Pentagon’s move mirrors action in Florida, where Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas warned that teachers who celebrate Kirk’s assassination will face investigation.
In a memo to educators, Kamoutsas wrote he “will be conducting an investigation of every educator who engages in this vile, sanctionable behavior.”
A Broader Pattern
Kirk’s assassination has been deemed a political killing by authorities.
The murder has exposed a chilling pattern of hostility against conservatives.
Instead of universal condemnation, prominent Democrats like Omar have mocked and minimized his legacy, while others in academia and government have openly cheered his death.
By pledging accountability, the Pentagon and states like Florida are signaling that celebrating political violence crosses a line.
