DHS Slams NYT for Pushing ‘Sob Story’ on Convicted Murderer Deported by Trump

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has ripped The New York Times after the paper ran a sympathetic piece on a convicted murderer deported under President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The Times published the story under the headline:

“The Man Who’d Served His Time In U.S. Is Deported to an African Prison.”

The article opened by noting Orville Etoria had shot and killed a man in Brooklyn nearly 30 years ago.

On Monday, DHS fired back in a post on X, saying:

“DISGRACEFUL AND DISGUSTING!

“The failing @NYTimes is peddling another disgusting sob story for a criminal illegal alien.

“Orville Etoria was convicted of MURDER.

“It is absolutely revolting that the New York Times is actively defending convicted murderers over American citizens.

“DHS will continue enforcing the law at full speed—without apology.”

Etoria’s record extended far beyond the 1996 murder.

According to DHS, he had also been convicted of armed robbery, forcible theft, and weapons charges.

He was sentenced to 25 years to life in New York’s Sing Sing Correctional Facility and ordered deported in 2009.

While incarcerated, Etoria earned a bachelor’s degree through Mercy College’s Hudson Link program and later pursued a master’s in divinity.

He was released in 2021, and the Biden administration allowed him to remain in the U.S. despite the outstanding deportation order, provided he checked in with ICE.

That changed this summer when the Trump administration carried out his deportation.

DHS announced in July that Etoria was one of five criminals deported on a “safe third country” flight to Eswatini, a small African nation.

At the time, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin wrote on X:

“A safe third country deportation flight to Eswatini in Southern Africa has landed.

“This flight took individuals so uniquely barbaric that their home countries refused to take them back.”

“These depraved monsters have been terrorizing American communities,” she added, celebrating that they are now “off of American soil.”

Etoria’s deportation has sparked controversy.

Jamaican officials dispute DHS claims that Jamaica refused to accept him back.

Regardless, DHS said the removal was long overdue.

“Orville Etoria, an illegal alien from Jamaica, is a convicted MURDERER,” DHS said in a statement.

“Sixteen years later, this MURDERER is off our streets and OUT of our country.

“President Trump and Secretary Noem are using every tool available to get criminal illegal aliens out of American communities and out of our country.”

Etoria now remains in Africa along with the other four deportees from Vietnam, Laos, Cuba, and Yemen.
