Disney Star’s Ex-Girlfriend Breaks Silence After Arrest for Crimes Against Children: ‘Many Years of Abuse’

Former Disney Channel actor Matt Prokop is facing a new and serious criminal charge after being arrested in Texas, prompting renewed scrutiny of his past conduct and allegations from former partners.

Prokop, 35, best known for his roles in “Geek Charming” and “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” was arrested on Christmas Eve in Victoria County, Texas.

Authorities confirmed that he is currently being held without bail.

He was initially booked for violating bond conditions tied to a prior 2024 arrest, as well as evading and resisting arrest.

Days later, on December 31, a warrant was signed adding a charge of possession or promotion of child pornography.

“Many Years of Abuse”

Following the disclosure of the new charge, Prokop’s ex-girlfriend spoke publicly for the first time about the accused child sex offender.

She described years of abuse during their relationship.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, she said the impact of that alleged abuse continues to affect her life.

“After many years of abuse, the effects are still very real and continue to impact my life,” she said.

“Right now, I’m taking time to heal privately, with the support of close friends and family.”

She emphasized that her decision to step back from public view should not be seen as minimizing the allegations against Prokop.

“Taking this time does not lessen the seriousness or harm of his actions,” she added.

She continued by asking that all alleged victims be treated with “care, dignity, and respect.”

According to the report, the woman first met Prokop online when she was young, though their romantic relationship allegedly did not begin until she was an adult.

The pair became engaged in January 2024.

Prokop’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the allegations.

Long History of Violence and Abuse

The Disney star has a documented history of legal trouble.

In May 2024, he was arrested in Texas after police responded to a report that he had assaulted his then-girlfriend during a weekend outing.

Investigators alleged that Prokop pushed her and slammed her head into an object, causing injuries significant enough to warrant an arrest.

Police also said he attempted to flee as officers tried to take him into custody.

Years earlier, Prokop’s former Disney co-star Sarah Hyland obtained a restraining order against him.

The two dated from 2008 to 2014 after meeting at an audition for “High School Musical 3.”

In court filings, Hyland alleged that Prokop was verbally and physically abusive over several years, including an incident in which she said he pinned her against a car and choked her.

“His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak,” Hyland stated in legal documents.

“I was scared and in fear for my life.”

Hyland said she was urged to seek protection after Prokop entered rehab in 2014 and staff warned her about his mental state upon release.

A temporary restraining order was granted in September of that year and later made permanent, requiring Prokop to stay at least 300 feet away from her.

Prokop was also prohibited from approaching Hyland’s dog.

Hyland, now 35, has spoken in recent years about the lasting psychological effects of domestic abuse without naming Prokop directly.

In an October 2024 interview, she described how trauma from abusive relationships can leave long-term emotional scars and urged more open discussion around domestic violence.

Prokop’s case remains pending.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the child pornography charge, and no trial date has been announced.
