New York’s Democrat Attorney General Letitia James is now under criminal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for her targeting of President Donald Trump, as well as another instance tied to her actions.
The DOJ launched the investigation into James under the direction of Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Subpoenas have reportedly been issued to James in connection with allegations of “deprivation of rights,” a major federal crime that carries severe penalties.
These sources confirm that an open grand jury investigation has been initiated, ordered by Bondi, and is being run by a U.S. Attorney’s office in New York.
While the specific U.S. Attorney handling the case has not been confirmed, it is believed the investigation falls under the Northern District of New York, given that James’s office is in Albany and the actions under investigation stem from there.
The investigation centers on “deprivation of rights,” with legal sources referencing Section 242 of Title 18.
The statute makes it a federal crime for an individual acting under color of law to willfully deprive someone of a right or privilege protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States.
If convicted under this statute, offenders face significant penalties, including life in prison or even the death penalty.
“For the purpose of Section 242, acts under ‘color of law’ include acts not only done by federal, state, or local officials within their lawful authority, but also acts done beyond the bounds of that official’s lawful authority, if the acts are done while the official is purporting to or pretending to act in the performance of his/her official duties,” the DOJ website states.
“Persons acting under color of law within the meaning of this statute include police officers, prison guards, and other law enforcement officials, as well as judges, care providers in public health facilities, and others who are acting as public officials.
“It is not necessary that the crime be motivated by animus toward the race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin of the victim.”
This news comes on the heels of revelations in May 2025 that James is already under investigation by the FBI for potential mortgage fraud.
Now, with multiple criminal probes underway, the embattled New York AG finds herself in hot water for a slew of troubling actions.
James has long campaigned on a platform of targeting President Trump, a stance that has only intensified since she assumed office.
James, a career Democrat, explicitly ran for office with the goal of taking down Trump.
She campaigned on the promise she would “get Trump” on unproven charges.
“I look forward to going into the office of the Attorney General every day, suing [Trump], and then going home,” James proudly declared.
However, this statement is now backfiring as it shows her clear intent to weaponize the law for political purposes.
Despite rising crime in New York during her tenure, James has continued to focus much of her energy on launching lawsuits against Trump.
This partisan obsession with bringing down the president has earned her the scorn of many, including Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY).
In 2024, Stefanik sent a 64-page letter to the New York Committee on Professional Standards.
Stafanik was calling for James to be disbarred due to her blatant and prejudicial comments about Trump ahead of her legal actions.
James has positioned herself as a key figure in the left’s “lawfare” strategy against Trump.
Her aggressive tactics, no matter how politically motivated, have now led her to face serious criminal investigations.
The reality of her get-Trump agenda is now having far-reaching consequences for her life, career, and her party’s continued use of law as a weapon in the political sphere.
With multiple investigations and mounting pressure, James may soon find herself held accountable for overstepping legal boundaries in her relentless pursuit of President Trump.
Ultimately, it may end up costing James her life.
This case serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by the weaponization of government power against political opponents.
