Former CNN host Don Lemon has been taken into custody by federal authorities, according to his attorney.
Lemon was arrested on Thursday night.
The arrest follows Lemon’s involvement in a protest that disrupted a church service in St. Paul, Minnesota.
He was part of a group of dozens of anti-ICE protesters as they rushed into Cities Church in St. Paul, Minneapolis, last week.
The protest interrupted a church service and led to tense confrontations.
Lemon livestreamed the demonstration earlier this month as activists interrupted a worship service to protest President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement policies.
The church was raided by leftists who falsely claimed that a paster worked for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Lemon appeared to be encouraging the protesters and promoting the false narrative about the pastor.
The protest drew swift condemnation from Trump administration officials.
Lemon and the mob of demonstrators were accused of intimidating Christian congregants during a religious service.
Abbe Lowell, Lemon’s attorney, characterized the arrest as an attack on press freedoms.
“An unprecedented attack on the First Amendment,” Lowell said of the arrest.
His arrest was also confirmed to Reuters by a Justice Department official familiar with the matter.
During the protest, Lemon misrepresented himself as a journalist while attempting to justify his presence.
Lemon said he was present because he claimed he had been tipped off about the demonstration ahead of time.
He alleged that he did not know the activists intended to disrupt the church service.
Video from the scene shows Lemon arguing with a parishioner about immigration enforcement as the disruption unfolded.
Administration officials condemned the incident shortly after it occurred, denouncing the protest as an act of intimidation against worshippers and criticizing those involved for targeting a religious service.
Further details about the specific charges and the status of the case were not immediately disclosed.
