Former CNN host Don Lemon has claimed that President Donald Trump’s administration would be willing to “go around a judge” and “retrofit” laws in order to prosecute him for his role in raiding a Minneapolis church with an anti-ICE activist mob.
It comes as the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) seeks to charge Lemon over his role in illegally disrupting the church service.
Lemon made the comments while speaking with fellow former CNN host Alisyn Camerota, now a special events anchor for Scripps News.
During the discussion, Lemon repeatedly insisted he had done nothing wrong, claiming he was present at the protest solely in a journalistic capacity.
He alleged that the Trump administration was determined to prosecute him by any means necessary, even if it required “retrofitting” laws or circumventing judicial oversight.
The remarks came just days after a federal appeals court ruled Friday that the Justice Department had established probable cause to charge Lemon and four others in connection with last weekend’s anti-ICE church storming in Minneapolis.
While the court found probable cause existed, it declined to compel a lower court judge to sign arrest warrants in the case.
Camerota described Lemon as “calm,” “resolute,” and “unapologetic,” adding that he sincerely believes his actions were protected by the First Amendment because he was misrepresenting himself as a journalist rather than a protester.
Referencing the fact that a judge had already denied a Justice Department request to charge Lemon, in a case that has resulted in three arrests so far, Camerota asked what he believed would happen next.
“I’m not naive,” Lemon said.
“I think they’re probably going to try again and again, as they did with Tish James and Comey and everyone.
“If one doesn’t work, then they try something else, and that fails, and they try something else, and then they just don’t give up because they, you know, they want to save face, but I don’t know what’s next.
“I think what’s next is that I have to be in it for the long haul and to, you know, and just to be strong, as always, and keep calm and carry on.”
Lemon went further, asserting that he fully expects the administration to act outside the law if that is what it takes to pursue charges against him.
He suggested he was being singled out because of his profile.
Accoridn gto Lemon, he’s being targeted because he was the “biggest name” involved in the church raid.
“If there’s no law to fit, they will try to fit or retrofit something or go around a judge and just do it themselves.
“And it doesn’t matter and everything that they say pertains to protesters.
“I was not a protester. It’s very clear about that.
“If you look at all the evidence, I’m not a protester.
“And so I think Alisyn — not that I think I know — I was the biggest name.
“And so if they get a Don Lemon, woohoo, that’s a victory, and also I’m the one who put the information out there.”
WATCH:
Lemon was part of a group of anti-ICE activists who stormed Cities Church in Minneapolis during a worship service earlier this month.
The protest targeted the church over false claims that one of its pastors is an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.
Federal authorities have already arrested three of the organizers involved in the church disruption.
Those taken into custody include Black Lives Matter activist Nekima Levy Armstrong.
