Dozens of Democrats Vote Against Resolution Honoring Charlie Kirk, Condemning Political Violence

The House of Representatives voted Friday to honor the late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

House lawmakers approved the resolution that condemns his assassination and pays tribute to his legacy.

The measure, introduced by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), passed in a 215–95 vote.

The resolution “condemns in the strongest possible terms the assassination of Charles ‘Charlie’ James Kirk, and all forms of political violence,” while also “honoring the life, leadership, and legacy of Charlie Kirk, whose steadfast dedication to the Constitution, civil discourse, and Biblical truth inspired a generation to cherish and defend the blessings of liberty.”

However, a staggering 58 House Democrats voted against the measure.

Vote Breakdown

All 215 votes in favor came from Republicans, though four GOP members did not cast a vote: Reps. Mike Collins (R-GA), Eli Crane (R-AZ), Rick Crawford (R-AR), and Derek Schmidt (R-KS).

On the Democrat side, 95 members supported the resolution, 58 voted against it, 38 voted present, and 22 did not vote.

Among those opposing the measure were progressive “Squad” members Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).

The resolution also extends condolences to Kirk’s family and commends law enforcement officers for apprehending the suspected assassin.

Division in the House

While members of both parties broadly condemned the killing, Kirk’s death has also exposed sharp divides on Capitol Hill.

Earlier in the week, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a censure resolution against Rep. Omar.

Mace argues that Omar disrespected Kirk in her remarks following his assassination.

Omar said at the time that “there is nothing more ‘effed up’ than to pretend, than to completely pretend that his words and actions have not been recorded and in existence.”

The congresswoman continued by mocking Kirk’s legacy, laughing as she spoke.

Mace’s motion, which would have stripped Omar of her committee assignments, failed after a 214–213 vote to table the measure.

Johnson’s Call for Unity

In announcing the resolution, Speaker Johnson emphasized the importance of rejecting violence across the political spectrum.

“Leaders at every level—government, education, media, and beyond—must stand united in unequivocal condemnation of political violence, regardless of their ideology,” the resolution stated.

It also warned against letting Kirk’s murder deepen national divides:

“The tragic loss of Charlie Kirk must not be allowed to deepen the divides in our nation but instead serve as a turning point to recommit ourselves to better angels, and to the timeless American principles of liberty governed by truth and the virtues of peaceful dialogue.”
