Ellen DeGeneres Buys $27M Mansion in California After Moving to UK to ‘Flee’ Trump

Liberal former daytime television host Ellen DeGeneres has quietly purchased a $27 million mansion in Montecito, California, roughly 14 months after relocating to the United Kingdom following President Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Despite the high-profile California purchase, DeGeneres insists that she does not plan to permanently return to the United States, according to People.

Instead, she intends to split her time between Montecito and the U.K.

“She’s not moving back to the US but will continue to split her time between both the UK and Montecito,” an insider told the outlet.

DeGeneres previously purchased a $14 million farmhouse in England’s Cotswolds in June 2024, several months after Trump won back the presidency following a four-year absence.

The property is located about 100 miles northwest of London.

She later relocated to a different glass-walled residence in the same region to better accommodate her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, and her need to keep horses nearby.

Still, sources indicated the couple has missed aspects of life in California.

One source told People that the 68-year-old entertainer and de Rossi have been “missing the California weather and horse scene” since moving overseas.

“Portia loves polo and her horses,” the source added.

DeGeneres was reportedly seen shopping for a Montecito property late last month on the same day she was expected to participate in a “no work, no school, no shopping” protest connected to opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.

Meanwhile, residents in the Cotswolds told People they had not seen DeGeneres “in ages.”

They said she had not visited a local pub for “several months.”

Another source said she had been seen frequently but not since last summer.

DeGeneres publicly acknowledged in July 2025 that Trump’s election influenced her decision to move abroad.

Speaking at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre, she said the couple “got here the day before the election,” adding, “and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ …

“And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”

At the time, she described life in England as “absolutely beautiful.”

DeGeneres has long been active in luxury real estate and is known for buying and selling high-end homes.

She reportedly attempted to sell her original U.K. farmhouse for $30 million but struggled to secure a buyer.

The Daily Mail later reported that the property is now close to selling after several million dollars were cut from the asking price.

The comedian has also remained politically outspoken.

Last month, she issued an apology related to the surge in ICE enforcement activity in Minneapolis.

“I just wanted to say I am so sorry for what is happening in Minneapolis and our country, really, but specifically Minneapolis right now,” DeGeneres said in a video.

“Because it’s where I shot my last stand-up special, and everybody there couldn’t have been more lovely.”
