Newly released emails from the Department of Justice (DOJ) are raising disturbing new questions about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, revealing that at least two of his properties appeared to contain secret underground tunnel and bunker networks.
The documents show Epstein maintained a long-running obsession with a mysterious “tunnel” at his private Caribbean island compound on Little Saint James, repeatedly directing staff to renovate, maintain, and reorganize the subterranean structure.
Hidden Tunnel Network Beneath Island Estate
One of the earliest references surfaced in August 2009, when Epstein received an email describing architectural work at the island property.
The message referenced a previous “team that added tunnels and office below the main house.”
An architecture firm later confirmed it had been hired to build a “subterranean screening room,” though the project was never completed after the firm cut ties with Epstein.
Years later, Epstein continued issuing direct instructions about the tunnel’s construction and upkeep.
In 2012, he wrote to an aide:
“Thanks, i want the floor done in the wood tunnel. all the equptent m=ved out floor done on thurs left till monday. thanks.”
By April 2015, aides confirmed progress in a series of messages, including:
“Tunnel floor completed.”
Subsequent emails referenced floor plans for both the “existing ‘tunnel’ building and m=intenance building with square footages.”

Expanding Underground Structures
The revelations extend beyond Epstein’s private “Pedophile Island” in the Caribbean.
Emails from October 2017 discussing Epstein’s Zorro Ranch in New Mexico included image files indicating the property may have contained at least six underground levels, accessed through a “sub cellar elevator.”

That same year, Epstein sought help reorganizing operations around the tunnel system, writing:
“id like to have a c=ll with you both, today.. i need help thinking about ho= to reorganie the island. move laundry, ? addtiona= staff. . ? tunnel move.”
He later proposed possible uses:
“tunnel with cots ? ballet room? co=t you less. . be generous with those that work.”
Storage, Chemicals, and Maintenance Activity
By 2018, aides described the tunnel as housing multiple operational spaces:
“Confirming the tunnel now houses Woodwo=k shop, Paint shop, Landscaping equipment, Plus s=orage for timber and tropical shipments.”
The message added:
“The new de=ign needs a conditioned space to also accommodate insecticides and fertiliz=r I would like to review existing drawings tomorrow before w= forward proposed thoughts.”
Previously released DOJ images also showed a trapdoor inside a maintenance room, though it remains unclear whether it connected to the same tunnel network referenced in the emails.
Questions From Epstein’s Inner Circle
The tunnel was not merely a maintenance feature—it appeared to be a topic Epstein discussed openly with associates.
In January 2018, Hollywood publicist Peggy Siegal asked him:
“Dearest Jeffrey.: How have you been?
“What’s up with the Caribbean island?
“Staff still sleeping in the tunnels?
“Retrieved all the furniture out of the ocean?
“Did you take photos? Are you presently rebuilding?”
Maintenance concerns continued into 2019.
Epstein requested:
“get new very large fan for tunnel! AUL heavy rusted !!!.”
An aide later explained:
“Please keep in mind we are addressing rust, painting= and epoxying floors, so things are getting shuffled in the tunnel and div=sion spaces right now.”
Workers were subsequently documented:
“cleaning up process at the tunnel storage room.”
And later:
“cleaned and organized the Tunnel after they completed the Dies=l Room.
“They will clean the Wood shop and organize it tomorrow morning.”
Work Continued Weeks Before Arrest
As late as May 2019, aides were still discussing active tunnel renovations:
“I saw yesterday work began on tunnels…do we have skin to redo? is our crew doing this work?
“Are we doing all sides of tunnel and not just roof?”
Just two months later, Epstein was arrested on federal sex-trafficking charges involving minors.
He was supposedly found dead in a New York City jail cell the following month while awaiting trial.
Mounting Questions
The newly surfaced emails add another troubling layer to the growing body of evidence surrounding Epstein’s global network, secretive properties, and hidden infrastructure.
With underground tunnels, bunker-style levels, and unexplained construction projects now documented in official DOJ files, the disclosures are likely to intensify demands for full transparency about what truly occurred inside Epstein’s secluded compounds, and who else may have known.
