Former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has died at the age of 56, her family has revealed.
Wojcicki, who was a key figure in the early days of Google, passed away after a two-year battle with cancer.
Her death was met with widespread mourning and tributes from the tech and online creator communities, recognizing her significant contributions to the growth and development of YouTube.
Wojcicki’s legacy includes her role in shaping YouTube’s policies and her efforts to support content creators, despite facing criticism for certain decisions during her tenure.
She led the controversial censorship efforts at the video streaming platform following President Donald Trump’s election victory in 2016.

Wojcicki, who is listed as one of the “people” of the World Economic Forum, resigned from YouTube in February 2023.
She said she wanted to focus on “family, health, and personal projects” but would be taking on an advisory role across Google and its parent company Alphabet.
Her passing was also noted for its personal impact, as she was remembered not only as a professional but also as a mother and friend.
Wojcicki’s death was announced by her husband Dennis Troper, who paid tribute to her “brilliant mind” in a post on Facebook.
Troper said Wojcicki was “not just my best friend and partner in life, but a brilliant mind, loving mother, and a dear friend to many.”
“Her impact on our family and the world was immeasurable.
“We are heartbroken but grateful for the time we had with her.
“Please keep our family in your thoughts at this time.”
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said Wojcicki had been living with cancer for two years, as he said it is “hard to imagine the world without her.”

Wojcicki’s death comes just months after her son Marco Troper died suddenly from a drug overdose.
Marco died inside a University of California, Berkeley dorm room, of a suspected overdose, at 19 years old.
His grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, confirmed his death in a Facebook post shared in February.
“Tragedy hit my family yesterday My beloved grandson Marco Troper, age 19 passed away yesterday,” Esther Wojcicki wrote.
“Our family is devastated beyond comprehension.”
An autopsy report found high concentrations of cocaine, amphetamine, and Xanax in his system at the time of death.
The report also stated that Marco suffered from “chronic substance abuse” and fractured his right wrist two weeks before his death.
