Federal authorities have arrested a leftist wanted in connection with a violent Independence Day attack on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Texas.
The incident has sparked renewed concern over escalating threats against law enforcement in America.
The FBI’s Dallas Field Office announced Tuesday the apprehension of 32-year-old U.S. Marine veteran Benjamin Song in Dallas.
Song had been on the run for nearly 11 days after allegedly participating in a coordinated assault on law enforcement officers at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, on July 4.
According to officials, Song was part of an organized group of 10 to 12 individuals who launched the brazen attack.
While 10 suspects were captured at the scene, Song managed to flee, prompting a manhunt that culminated in his arrest.
In a statement, FBI Dallas Field Office Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock said:
“The FBI has worked tirelessly to arrest everyone associated with the shooting at the Prairieland Detention Center.
“We would like to thank all the entities that publicized this case and assisted in our efforts to successfully locate Benjamin Song.
“His arrest is the result of our determination to protect not only the community, but also our law enforcement partners that were the targets of a coordinated attack,” Rothrock continued.
“We have said it before: the FBI will not tolerate acts of violence toward law enforcement and will thoroughly investigate anyone that commits these types of offenses.”
Federal investigators had previously offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to Song’s capture.
Song, identified as a former Marine Corps reservist, now faces three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer and three additional counts of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
A criminal complaint outlines the severity of the attack, noting that Song is accused of firing two AR-15-style rifles at two federal correctional officers and one Alvarado police officer.
According to the complaint, the police officer was shot in the neck by a suspect hiding in nearby woods.
Additional attackers reportedly fired dozens of rounds at unarmed correctional officers who had stepped outside the facility.
The assault is being treated as a premeditated and coordinated ambush, raising questions about domestic radicalization, organized threats against immigration enforcement, and the Democrats’ rhetoric that many conservatives believe has demonized federal law enforcement officers for simply doing their jobs.
While legacy media outlets have remained mostly silent about the coordinated attack, conservative leaders and commentators have demanded answers and accountability.
With the arrest of Song, the federal government now turns its focus to prosecuting one of the most serious attacks against ICE personnel in recent memory.
And as political tensions continue to rise nationwide, many are asking: How many more warnings will it take before Washington takes the targeting of law enforcement seriously?
