Democrat Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) blasted members of his own party who have been flirting with socialism and rejecting capitalism.
The senator blasted those Democrats as “morons” and pointed to the lived experience of people who suffered under communist regimes.
Fetterman was asked about a new Gallup poll showing that just 42% of Democrats view capitalism favorably, compared with 66% who now view socialism positively.
He told reporters he recently put the question to people while traveling in Croatia.
“I literally was in a former communist nation, and I asked that,” Fetterman said.
“I said, ‘Some people in my party, some of the lefties are talking about socialism now. What do you think?’
“And he’s like, ‘That’s the worst thing ever. You would never want to live here, I’ve lived through that kind of a thing. You’re going to need a reality check if you ever adopt any of those things.’
“You know, like, you are morons.
“It’s like, ‘it was a nightmare for us, and now we are a free market nation.’ It was Croatia.”
Fetterman added that people in Croatia were “mystified” that Americans were even debating socialism.
WATCH:
The Gallup poll, conducted in August among just over 1,000 adults, found that Democrats under 50 have especially soured on capitalism.
Meanwhile, Democrats over 50 have largely held steady in their views.
Since 2010, Gallup noted, Democrats overall have steadily warmed to socialism.
The comments land at a time when far-left Democrats such as New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani are pushing radical proposals like government-run grocery stores and openly railing against police.
Mamdani previously said “police do not create safety.”
The radical Democrat suggested that police should not respond to domestic violence calls.
However, the remarks sparked outrage from survivors.
Fetterman has repeatedly distanced himself from Mamdani and his wing of the party.
He told Fox News in July that Mamdani is “not even a Democrat” and stressed:
“I don’t really agree with virtually any of it, politically.”
Other Democrats have echoed that criticism.
Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) has said socialist candidates like Mamdani should “create their own party.”
Meanwhile, Rep. Laura Gillen (D-NY) warned he is “too extreme to lead” New York City.
Fetterman’s blunt assessment underscores the divide within the Democratic Party as more members embrace the failed ideology of socialism.
It comes even while people who lived under it are warning the U.S. not to make the same mistake.
