Former NFL Star Found Dead in Los Angeles with ‘Blunt Head Trauma’ and ‘Stab Wounds’

Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Kevin Johnson was found dead Wednesday in a homeless encampment in Los Angeles, authorities confirmed.

The retired NFL football player was 55 years old.

Police responded to a report of an unconscious man and pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the cause of death was listed as “blunt head trauma” and “stab wounds.”

The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Investigators believe Johnson had been living at the encampment.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the killing to come forward.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve De Jong told Newsweek:

“Unfortunately, it appears he was homeless.

“It looks like he was probably living there.”

Friends and family members remembered Johnson as a well-liked, upbeat presence whose later years were marked by significant health challenges.

In comments to ABC7 Eyewitness News in Los Angeles, Bruce Todd said:

“He was my best friend.

“I was best man at his wedding…

“Great guy, fun-loving.

“The community is going to miss him.”

Johnson played in the NFL from 1995 to 1997, suiting up for the Philadelphia Eagles and later the Las Vegas Raiders.

A standout at Texas Southern University, he was selected in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, though he never appeared in a game for the franchise.

Johnson broke into the league with Philadelphia in 1995, appearing in 23 games over two seasons.

He recorded 43 tackles, seven sacks, and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

He joined the Raiders in 1997, tallying 11 tackles in 15 games.

After his NFL career, Johnson transitioned to the Arena Football League, playing both offense and defense.

He helped the Orlando Predators win an ArenaBowl championship in 1998 and later played for the Los Angeles Avengers.

Authorities have not announced any arrests in the case.
