Leftist billionaire George Soros has pumped $10 million into Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom’s controversial ballot initiative to redraw California’s congressional maps.
The donation, the single largest contribution to the effort, comes as Newsom pushes Proposition 50, The New York Times reported Friday.
The anti-Trump measure that would overhaul California’s congressional lines in response to Republican-led redistricting in Texas and other states.
Two sources with direct knowledge confirmed Soros’s contribution to the Times.
Soros’s Role
Soros, long known for financing progressive prosecutors and left-wing campaigns across the country, is the founder of the $25 billion Open Society Foundations.
His son Alex took over as chairman of the OSF board in 2022, continuing the family’s political influence network.
The $10 million infusion helped Newsom raise roughly $70 million for his redistricting campaign, according to the report.
Newsom’s Proposition 50
Newsom rolled out Proposition 50 earlier this year in an effort to counter President Donald Trump’s growing influence.
The governor describes it as a direct response to Republican redistricting efforts in Texas.
“We are talking about emergency measures to respond to what’s happening in Texas, and we will nullify what happens in Texas,” Newsom said in August.
The measure will appear on California’s ballot during a special election on November 4.
Newsom has claimed the initiative could net Democrats an additional five congressional seats.
“We’ll pick up five seats with the consent of the people,” Newsom argued.
“And that’s the difference between the approach we’re taking and the approach they’re taking.
“We’re doing it on a temporary basis.
“We’re doing it in a fully transparent way, and we’re doing it by asking the people of the state of California for their consent and support.”
Redistricting Battles
In Texas, Republican lawmakers passed and Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law new congressional maps this summer, following a high-profile standoff in which dozens of Democratic legislators fled the state to block a quorum.
Despite the theatrics, the GOP-controlled legislature advanced the maps, which could deliver Republicans five additional seats.
Trump praised those efforts and underscored the stakes during an August interview with CNBC.
“In California, it’s all gerrymandered,” Trump said.
“And we have an opportunity in Texas to pick up five seats.
“We have a really good governor, and we have good people in Texas. And I won Texas.
“I got the highest vote in the history of Texas, as you probably know, and we are entitled to five more seats.”
Trump vs. Soros
Trump has repeatedly blasted Soros for bankrolling left-wing causes and candidates.
The president has even called for investigations into Soros and his “radical Left son,” Alex, over their extensive political activities.
“Soros, and his group of psychopaths, have caused great damage to our Country!” Trump wrote on Truth Social in August.
“That includes his Crazy, West Coast friends.
“Be careful, we’re watching you!”
