House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has attacked Republicans’ election integrity legislation, claiming the GOP-backed SAVE America Act amounts to “voter suppression,” even as overwhelming majorities of Americans, including many Democrat voters, support voter identification requirements.
Speaking during his weekly press conference ahead of an expected House vote, Jeffries declared:
“Republicans have adopted voter suppression as an electoral strategy.
“That’s what the so-called SAVE Act is all about.”
Jeffries argued the updated legislation is “worse than” the original Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
The original bill passed the House in April 2025 with unanimous Republican support and backing from four Democrats.
What the Bill Would Do
The original SAVE Act centered on requiring proof of citizenship during voter registration nationwide.
The new version, led by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), goes further by:
• Establishing a federal voter ID requirement for national elections
• Mandating citizenship verification across voter rolls
• Expanding information-sharing between state officials and federal authorities
Jeffries seized on the information-sharing provision, falsely portraying it as a scheme to hand Americans’ voting data to immigration enforcement agencies.
“This version, as I understand it, will actually give [the Department of Homeland Security] the power to get voting records from states across the country,” he said.
“Why would these extremists think that’s a good idea?”
“Who’d want DHS and ICE, who have been brutally, viciously, and violently targeting everyday Americans, to have more data about the American people?
“It’s outrageous,” Jeffries asserted.
“Something is really wrong with these folks.
“I think they’re trying to lose elections at this point.”
Democrats’ Opposition Collides with Public Opinion
Despite Jeffries’ claims, voter ID laws remain one of the most popular election integrity measures in the country.
An August 2025 Pew Research Center survey found:
• 83% of Americans support government-issued photo ID to vote
• Only 16% oppose such requirements
Support also extends across party lines, underscoring how far Democrat leadership has moved from the electorate on basic election safeguards.
Republicans argue that proof-of-citizenship and voter ID requirements are necessary to protect election integrity, particularly after years of illegal immigration and growing concerns about non-citizen participation in U.S. elections.
Legislative Outlook
Jeffries predicted the bill would fail in the Senate, where Democrats can still block legislation under the 60-vote filibuster threshold.
“It’s not going to pass,” he said.
“If it squeaks by the House, it’s dead on arrival in the Senate.
“They’re wasting time.”
That looming blockade is why some House conservatives are urging Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to consider forcing a standing filibuster or otherwise changing Senate rules to allow election security legislation to pass with a simple majority.
Thune has not committed to a specific course of action.
