Hero Cop Killed in NYC Shooting Was Father-of-Two with Baby on the Way

Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old NYPD cop and father of two young boys, was tragically killed in the mass shooting that unfolded in midtown Manhattan on Monday.

The death of the hero police officer has left a widow eight months pregnant with their third child.

Islam had only been on the force since December 2021.

He was working a second job in private security when he was fatally shot while responding to a gunman carrying an M4 assault rifle.

The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, opened fire in the lobby of an office building that houses major firms like Blackstone and the NFL.

In a horrific display of violence, Tamura killed four people, including Officer Islam, before reportedly taking his own life on the 33rd floor.

Islam’s heroism was evident as he was shot in the back while trying to stop the gunman’s rampage.

His sacrifice highlights the extraordinary bravery of officers who put their lives on the line to protect their communities.

In an emotional press conference, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Officer Islam, describing him as a hero who “died as he lived.”

Tisch remarked that Islam “put himself in harm’s way” and made the ultimate sacrifice, embodying the selflessness expected of law enforcement officers.

She added, “He made the ultimate sacrifice — shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to the city.”

Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, called it “devastating” and praised Islam’s commitment to his work, noting that he was a proud police officer who “went out every single day to provide for his family.”

Tributes poured in from across the city, including from EMS First, which posted on Instagram:

“Tonight, a chair at the dinner table is left empty.

“Tonight, a family grieves a loss that cannot be measured.”

The post honored Islam’s sacrifice, declaring:

“Remember his name. Honor his service. Never forget his face.”

In addition to his duties with the NYPD, Islam had also been working as a private security guard for Rudin Management Company, despite the obvious dangers of his second job.

A family friend shared that Islam had transitioned from a safer security position to law enforcement because he wanted to “leave behind a legacy for his family.”

His decision to serve in law enforcement was rooted in his desire to provide for his loved ones and make a difference, despite the risks involved.

While family, friends, and fellow officers grieve Islam’s loss, they also remember his unwavering dedication to his work and community.

Islam’s brother-in-law, Salman Ahmed, stated, “He loved his job” and felt safe in his role as a police officer.

The shooting serves as a stark reminder of the danger law enforcement officers face daily in their mission to protect and serve, and Islam’s life and death embody the ultimate commitment to duty.

As investigators continue to probe the details of the shooting, including whether the gunman may have been targeting the NFL offices, the city mourns a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of others.

In the wake of this tragedy, the NYPD and all of New York City stand united in honoring Officer Islam’s bravery and selflessness.

In the words of EMS First, “A hero made the ultimate, selfless sacrifice in the line of duty.”
