Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accused President Donald Trump and his supporters of what she described as deep “moral rot,” arguing that the MAGA movement has abandoned Christian values in favor of “cruelty” and “savagery.”
Clinton made the remarks in an essay published Thursday in The Atlantic, titled “MAGA’s War on Empathy.”
In the article, Clinton sharply criticized Trump, his allies, and conservative Christians who support his administration.
Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump, framed her argument around recent confrontations in Minnesota involving anti-ICE leftists and federal immigration agents.
She claims those events illustrate what she calls a broader moral collapse within the MAGA movement.
“That compassion is weak, and cruelty is strong has become an article of MAGA faith,” Clinton wrote.
“Trump and his allies believe that the more inhumane the treatment, the more likely it is to spread fear,” she added.
Clinton cited biblical passages throughout the essay, arguing that Trump’s policies, particularly immigration enforcement, are fundamentally incompatible with Christianity.
The twice-failed Democrat presidential candidate described what she called the “savagery” of those policies as a “feature, not a bug.”
She pointed to two recent fatal shootings in Minneapolis involving Americans opposing immigration enforcement.
The shooting of anti-ICE activist Renee Nicole Good by a federal agent sparked weeks of protests.
Good’s death was followed by the later death of Alex Pretti, an anti-ICE agitator who was shot and killed by federal agents during subsequent unrest.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
The administration has maintained that the federal agents involved acted lawfully.
However, Democrats and their corporate media allies are attempting to frame the deaths as “murders.”
“MAGA rejects the teachings of Jesus to ‘love thy neighbor’ and care for ‘the last, the least, and the lost,’” Clinton continued.
“It recognizes only a zero-sum war of all against all.”
Clinton argued that what she described as Christian nationalism within the MAGA movement has distorted faith away from core principles such as “dignity, mercy, and compassion.”
“The glorification of cruelty and rejection of compassion don’t just shape the Trump administration’s policies,” she wrote.
“Those values are also at the core of Trump’s own character and worldview.”
“They have become a rallying cry for a cadre of hard-right ‘Christian influencers’ who are waging a war on empathy,” Clinton added.
The White House has not responded to Clinton’s essay.
Clinton has faced backlash in the past for her rhetoric toward Trump supporters.
During the 2016 campaign, she infamously said:
“You could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables.
“Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it.
“And unfortunately, there are people like that.
“And he has lifted them up.”
