Hillary Clinton: Mass Migration ‘Went Too Far’ – ‘It Needs Fixing’

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested a tougher rhetorical posture on mass migration while speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

During the event, Clinton acknowledged that recent migration trends have been “disruptive and destabilizing.”

She warned the crown of global elites that the issue must be addressed with stronger border security.

Clinton made the remarks during a panel titled “The West-West Divide: What Remains of Common Values.”

“There is a legitimate reason to have a debate about things like migration,” Clinton said.

“It went too far, it’s been disruptive and destabilizing, and it needs to be fixed in a humane way with secure borders that don’t torture and kill people, and how we’re going to have a strong family structure because it is at the base of civilization.”

Contrast with Previous Positions

Clinton’s comments mark a notable tonal shift from her earlier positions on immigration enforcement and border security.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, she opposed large-scale expansion of a border wall while acknowledging that physical barriers could be appropriate in certain locations.

She supported former President Barack Obama’s executive actions deferring deportation for millions of illegal aliens brought to the United States as children or as parents of U.S. citizens and sought to end family detention policies.

Clinton also backed deportations for violent criminals but argued at the time that immigration raids created “unnecessary fear and disruption in communities,” according to prior reporting.

Past Criticism of Trump Administration Policies

Clinton sharply criticized deportation policies under President Donald Trump, particularly the separation of children from families at the border.

On a post on X in 2018, she wrote:

“It is now the official policy of the US government — a nation of immigrants — to separate children from their families.

“That is an absolute disgrace. #FamiliesBelongTogether.”

More recently, she argued that immigration, both legal and illegal, has strengthened the U.S. economy.

During a Newmark Civic Life Series event in Manhattan last year, Clinton said:

“One of the reasons why our economy did so much better than comparable advanced economies across the world is because we actually had a replenishment, because we had a lot of immigrants, legally and undocumented, who had a, you know, larger than normal — by American standards — families.”

Renewed Debate Over Border Security

Clinton’s latest remarks come as immigration enforcement and border policy remain central political flashpoints during President Trump’s second term.

The Trump administration is pursuing expanded deportations and stricter enforcement measures.

Her acknowledgment that migration “went too far” underscores growing divisions within Democrat leadership over how to address border security, even as longstanding policy disagreements between the parties continue to define the national debate.
