Homicide Detectives Called in After Mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie Disappears

Police homicide detectives have been brought in, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation is “aware” of the disappearance of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, according to reporting aired Monday on “Today.”

The program made Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance from her home in Tucson on Saturday night its top story Monday morning.

Savannah Guthrie remained off the air and issued a statement through the show.

NBC senior crime correspondent Tom Winter said federal authorities are monitoring the case due to what investigators encountered at the scene.

“The FBI is also aware of this case… given the nature of what was found at the scene,” Winter said.

“That’s what has got them so concerned.”

Winter added that investigators are limiting public disclosures.

“We are withholding some details, as we would do with any investigation, to make sure the investigation could go forward without us interfering in it,” he said.

Savannah Guthrie released a statement during the broadcast.

She thanked supporters and urged the public to assist law enforcement.

“I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” Guthrie said.

“Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.

“We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone, anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s office at 520-351-4900.”

Nancy Guthrie was last seen around 9:45 p.m. MST Saturday night in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson, where she resides.

Today co-host Craig Melvin told viewers the disappearance was “deeply personal” to the show’s staff and hosts.

“This is very concerning to us,” Melvin said.

“We don’t typically get involved at a scene like this, but it’s very concerning.”

Investigators said she was not exhibiting signs of cognitive impairment around the time she went missing.

According to the program, Customs and Border Protection has joined Pima County Sheriff’s Office deputies in the search, given the home’s proximity to the U.S.–Mexico border.

Drones and a sheriff’s aircraft have also been deployed.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said the case is still being handled as a search-and-rescue operation.

However, he could not rule out the possibility of foul play.

The investigation remains ongoing.
