Honduras’ Socialist Leaders Demand Public Protests After Election Defeat, Accuse Trump of ‘Coercing’ Outcome

Honduran socialist presidential candidate Rixi Moncada has called for mass protests and demanded the annulment of the country’s still-unfinished election results, accusing President Donald Trump of “interference” and “coercion” in the vote.

On Sunday, Moncada, representing the ruling Libre party of President Xiomara Castro, read an official party statement claiming the election amounted to an “electoral coup” and denouncing Trump’s alleged “foreign interference.”

“Libre does not recognize the elections held under the interference and coercion of Donald Trump and the allied oligarchy that attacked the people with an electoral coup,” Moncada said at a Sunday night press conference.

She also accused opponents of “electoral terrorism.”

Moncada Trails Far Behind as Conservative Candidate Holds Narrow Lead

Honduras has been locked in electoral uncertainty since the November 30 vote.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) has yet to finalize the tally, citing “technical problems” with the contracted vote-transmission platform.

Preliminary results reported by local media as of Sunday night show:

   • Nasry Asfura, a conservative candidate backed by Trump, leading by roughly 0.7%

   • Salvador Nasralla, the Liberal Party candidate and former vice president, in a close second

   • Rixi Moncada in third place, with under 20% — leaving her effectively without a path to victory

Despite this, Moncada has continued to level accusations of “electoral fraud and interference.”

She is criticizing Trump for endorsing Asfura and condemning her past praise of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

Moncada Attacks Trump, Rejects “Imperial Narrative of Communism”

According to El Heraldo, Moncada repeated her charges against Trump and claimed she was targeted by an “attack” built on the “imperial narrative of communism.”

The socialist candidate also warned members of her own party not to acknowledge any transition process should Asfura or Nasralla win:

Libre “disavows any public official who ‘places themselves at the disposal of and announces cooperation in the government transition with the enemies of the people, the perpetrators of this ongoing electoral coup.’”

“No one here is giving up, no to the electoral coup, no to interference,” she said.

She continued by calling for protests, demonstrations, and sit-ins beginning December 13 to defend “national dignity.”

Nasralla Also Blames Trump for the Outcome

Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla separately told Reuters on Thursday that Trump “damaged” his chances due to alleged “last-minute interference,” claiming the endorsement of Asfura “flipped” the race.

Trump, for his part, has criticized both socialist candidates during the campaign.

In addition to denouncing Moncada’s praise of Castro, the former president described Nasralla as a “borderline communist.”

Nasralla, who served as vice president under Xiomara Castro, told Reuters he considers himself “center-right.”

The CNE has not announced when the final tally will be completed.
