Republicans on the House Oversight Committee are launching an investigation into Democrat President Joe Biden’s botched withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in August 2021.
Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced the move in a statement in which he blasted the Biden administration’s handling of the operation.
Almost 200 people were killed during the evacuation, including 13 U.S. service members.
“The Biden Administration was tragically unprepared for the Afghanistan withdrawal and their decisions in the region directly resulted in a national security and humanitarian catastrophe,” Comer said in his statement.
“U.S. servicemen and women lost their lives, Americans were abandoned, taxpayer dollars are unaccounted for, the Taliban gained access to military equipment, progress for Afghan women was derailed, and the entire area is now under hostile Taliban control,” Comer continued.
“The American people deserve answers and the Biden Administration’s ongoing obstruction of this investigation is unacceptable.”

While Democrats controlled the lower chamber, the Biden admin withheld information from Republican members of the House Oversight Committee.
However, now that Republicans have the House majority, the president and his administration won’t be able to avoid answering questions or turning over documents.
“With the power of the gavel, Oversight Republicans are determined to provide answers, transparency, and accountability,” Comer vowed.
“Every relevant department and agency should be prepared to cooperate and provide all requested information.
“The American people expect nothing less.”
President Biden's botched withdrawal from Afghanistan resulted in the death of 13 brave US servicemembers, Americans left behind enemy lines, and military equipment in the hands of the Taliban.
