Republican Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) is spearheading an effort to crack down on left-wing “sanctuary city” mayors across the country.
Carter has introduced a new bill aimed at holding mayors of sanctuary cities accountable for crimes committed by illegal aliens within their jurisdictions, including murder.
The proposed legislation is dubbed the “Establishing Responsibility for Illegals’ Crimes and Adding Deterrence and Accountability for Mayors’ Sanctuary Cities Act,” or the “ERIC ADAMS Act.”
The bill seeks to place criminal liability on sanctuary city mayors if an illegal alien is found guilty of murder.
The bill is named after New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is currently up for re-election this November.
Carter’s move comes amid rising frustration with sanctuary city policies and growing public concern over the dangers posed by illegals who are not held accountable under the law.
Carter, who is also running for the U.S. Senate in 2026 to challenge Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), says that local leaders who adopt sanctuary policies should face the consequences when those policies lead to tragic outcomes.
The bill would make sanctuary city mayors liable for “criminal negligence resulting in manslaughter” if a foreign criminal commits murder in their jurisdiction and if the mayor’s policies directly contributed to the failure to detain or remove the individual before the crime was committed.
Under the terms of the legislation, a mayor could face up to seven years in prison and certain fines.
The enforcement of the bill would fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Attorney General.
Carter’s push for accountability comes in the wake of the Trump administration’s decision to sue New York City over its sanctuary policies.
This is one of several lawsuits the Trump administration has launched against Democrat-run cities and states over their sanctuary policies.
The president has consistently criticized Democrat-controlled jurisdictions for enabling illegal immigration and undermining the rule of law.
“Laken Riley and countless other loved ones could still be alive today if our immigration laws were respected by mayors of sanctuary cities,” Carter said, referring to the tragic case of a nursing student killed by an illegal immigrant in early 2024 in Georgia.
“As far as I’m concerned, they have blood on their hands and should be held personally accountable for creating a lawless environment that allows criminal illegal aliens to commit murder.”
The introduction of the ERIC ADAMS Act underscores the growing frustration among conservatives and law enforcement officials with sanctuary cities and their potential role in fostering an environment where criminals, many of whom are in the U.S. illegally, can avoid detection and deportation.
Critics of sanctuary city policies argue that they directly undermine federal immigration laws and pose a risk to public safety by providing safe havens for illegal aliens, including those with violent criminal histories.
As more cities embrace sanctuary policies, Carter’s bill aims to send a strong message to mayors: if you choose to ignore the law and shield illegal alien criminals, you will be held accountable when their actions harm American citizens.
The debate surrounding sanctuary cities is set to continue as the fight for border security and the enforcement of immigration laws remains a central issue in American politics.
