Hundreds of Teens Run Riot in NYC During Planned ‘Takeover’ Rampage

Hundreds of teenagers flooded a Bronx shopping center on Presidents’ Day, sparking chaos inside the Mall at Bay Plaza and drawing a heavy police response after the gathering spiraled into disorder and confrontations with officers.

Local outlet News 12 reported that the planned social-media-organized “takeover” began around 2 p.m.

Authorities responded to reports of as many as 200 teens behaving disruptively throughout the mall and surrounding businesses.

Witnesses described a scene of escalating disorder.

“This is insane,” one neighbor, Keshana, told News 12.

“I mean, I haven’t seen it this bad ever.”

The unrest spread beyond the mall itself, including into a nearby McDonald’s, where property damage was reported.

A window at the restaurant was shattered during the disturbance.

“A bunch of kids just came in here, they were breaking everything,” employee William Norman said.

“I was scared for my life, man. I got kids at home.”

Video circulating online appeared to show teens confronting officers and resisting attempts to detain individuals.

In one clip, officers struggled to restrain a fleeing suspect before others in the crowd intervened, allowing him to escape.

Footage also showed an officer swinging at a member of the group during the confrontation.

When asked by a News 12 reporter why they were participating in the chaos, several teens laughed and replied, “We was bored!”

Police said officers issued repeated warnings and ordered the crowd to disperse before making arrests.

The riot was promoted on social media and reportedly intended to continue until participants were forced out.

It was ultimately broken up without the mall closing.

Eighteen individuals were taken into custody, according to News 12, while WABC reported that formal charges are still pending.

Public reaction to the incident was swift and critical.

Many commenters rejected the teens’ claim of boredom as justification for the destruction and disorder.

“They were bored???” one commenter wrote.

“God forbid they stay home and pick up a book to read or maybe study or do some chores.”

“This is embarrassing,” another added.

“Bored? Read a book, invent something.”

Others pointed to deeper concerns about discipline and accountability, arguing the episode reflects broader cultural and parental failures rather than simple teenage restlessness.

The Presidents’ Day disturbance underscores growing concerns in major cities about large, social-media-driven youth gatherings that can rapidly turn disruptive and dangerous when left unchecked.
