Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has compared comments made by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller about migrant populations to language used by the Nazis to describe Jewish people.
Omar has been drawing renewed scrutiny as Minnesota continues to grapple with the fallout from the Feeding Our Future fraud scheme.
During a Sunday interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” host Margaret Brennan asked Omar to respond to a statement Miller, who is Jewish, posted online regarding mass migration.
“No magic transformation occurs when failed states cross borders,” Miller wrote.
“At scale, migrants and their descendants recreate the conditions, and terrors, of their broken homelands.”
Omar called the comment “white supremacist rhetoric” and directly linked it to historical anti-Semitism.
“It reminds me of the way the Nazis described Jewish people in Germany,” Omar said of remarks by Miller, whose grandparents fled the Holocaust.
“And you know, as we know, there have been many immigrants who have tried to come to the United States who have turned back, you know, one of them being Jewish immigrants.
“We know the way that people were described who were coming from Ireland, Irish immigrants.”
“We know the way in which people were described back then, when there were Italian immigrants,” she continued.
“And to me, you know, we’re, we’re, yes, of course, ethnically Somali, we are in this country as Americans, we are citizens, we are a productive part of this nation, and we will continue to be.”

Fraud Scandal in Minnesota’s Somali Community
President Donald Trump has repeatedly highlighted the Feeding Our Future scandal as evidence of systemic failures in Minnesota’s oversight of federal nutrition programs.
As of November 2025, more than 75 individuals have been charged in connection with what prosecutors describe as one of the largest welfare fraud schemes in U.S. history.
Some defendants come from Minnesota’s Somali diaspora, the largest Somali community in the United States.
However, officials note that the ringleader is not Somali.
Omar sharply criticized Trump’s comments toward the community.
“It’s disgusting. It’s completely disgusting,” she said.
“These are Americans that he is calling garbage.
“And we feel like there is an unhealthy obsession that he has on the Somali community, and an unhealthy and creepy obsession that he has with me.”
“I think it is also really important for us to remember that this kind of hateful rhetoric and this level of dehumanizing can lead to dangerous actions by people who listen to the president,” she added.
Omar Pressed on Fraud Oversight Failures
Omar also faced questions last week about how the massive fraud operation went undetected for so long.
During a recent interview on CNN, she attributed the collapse of oversight to the rapid rollout of pandemic-era programs.
“I think what happened, um, is that, you know, when you have these, kind of new programs that are, um, designed to help people, you’re oftentimes relying on third parties to be able to facilitate,” Omar said.
“And I just think that a lot of the Covid programs that were set up — they were set up so quickly that a lot of the guardrails did not get created.”
The Feeding Our Future scandal remains under federal investigation.
Prosecutors indicate that additional charges are expected as the case expands.
