Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is accusing Immigration and Customs Enforcement of targeting Somali Americans in Minnesota, telling a local news outlet on Sunday that her own son was recently stopped by ICE agents after leaving a Target store.
During an interview with WCCO’s Esme Murphy, Omar said her son routinely carries his passport out of fear of being questioned about his immigration status.
“Yesterday, after he made a stop at Target, he did get pulled over by ICE agents, and once he was able to produce his passport ID, they did let him go,” she said.
Murphy pressed further.
“So your son went to Target last night with his passport?”
“He always carries it with him,” Omar responded.
“In case he gets pulled over?” Murphy asked.
Which he did, by ICE.”
“Yes,” Omar said.
She continued by adding that ICE agents had also recently entered a mosque where her son had been present, but left without detaining anyone.
Omar claimed she has warned her son about being in areas where ICE is operating because, she argued, agents are “racially profiling.”
The congresswoman then claimed that ICE agents are “looking for young men who look Somali that they think are undocumented.”

Omar did not provide any evidence to support the alleged encounter.
Her comments come just days after Omar sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, accusing federal immigration authorities of unconstitutional conduct in Minnesota.
In the letter, Omar alleged that “Constituents, advocates, and local officials have documented blatant racial profiling, an egregious level of unnecessary force, and activity that appears designed for social media rather than befitting a law enforcement agency.”
She further argued that the enforcement surge was politically motivated, writing:
“It is clear to me that this surge came in direct response to Trump’s racist comments about Somali people, and about me in particular.
“Earlier this month, Trump called Somali immigrants ‘garbage’ and ranted that he does not want us in this country.”
Trump’s comments did not refer to race, however.
The president was blasting Somali criminals who defrauded taxpayers of millions of dollars, and the Minnesota officials, including Omar, who allowed the fraud to happen.
ICE has not yet publicly commented on her claims.
No details have been released by federal officials regarding the alleged stop involving Omar’s son.
