Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has demanded that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem be impeached and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) be “abolished.”
Omar held a press conference alongside fellow “Squad” member Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), escalating demands for punitive action against federal law enforcement following the fatal shootings of two agitators in Minneapolis by federal immigration officials.
The press conference took place one day after Omar was sprayed with an unknown substance during a town hall event on Tuesday evening.
The incident drew widespread media attention.
However, evidence appears to suggest that the incident was staged.
During the town hall event, Omar called for the impeachment of Noem, demanded the abolition of ICE, urged criminal prosecution of the federal agents involved in the recent shootings, and pressed Democrats to vote against legislation funding the DHS and ICE.
Speaking to those gathered outside Karmel Mall in Minneapolis, an area with several Somali-owned businesses, Omar said:
“Voting no on the funding bill is the bare minimum.
“Backing the resolution to impeach Kristi Noem is the bare minimum. Holding law-breaking ICE agents legally accountable is the bare minimum.
“We must abolish ICE. This moment demands it.”
Omar’s insistence that Democrats block the DHS funding bill reflects a broader coalition of Democrats unified in opposition to the legislation following the federal officer-involved shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
If lawmakers fail to reach an agreement by Saturday at midnight, a lapse in appropriations would technically occur.
However, because the deadline falls over a weekend, Congress would have limited time to resolve differences before significant impacts are felt.
The White House invited Senate Democrats to discuss government funding options.
Senate Democrat leadership declined the offer and instead released a list of demands aimed at restricting ICE operations in exchange for votes to avert a shutdown.
At Wednesday’s press conference, Omar described federal immigration enforcement as a “federal occupation” and accused the government of engaging in “state-sanctioned violence and political retribution.”
“We know this is not about public safety or immigration enforcement. It is state-sanctioned violence and political retribution,” Omar said.
“What is unfolding in our state is not accidental.
“It is part of a coordinated effort to target black and brown immigrant and Muslim communities through fear, racial profiling, and intimidation from this administration’s immigration agenda is not about law enforcement.”
Pressley praised Omar’s leadership and echoed similar rhetoric when she addressed the crowd.
The radical Democrats described President Donald Trump as an “occupant” and refused to call him by name.
“We have an occupant in the Oval Office who traffics in hate, is hellbent on inflicting hurt and harm and trauma on everyone who calls this country home with a laser focus on our most vulnerable,” Pressley said.
“He has governed with malice and used Ice agents to terrorize our cities for families apart, operating with impunity.
“Rogue masked agents who violate people’s rights in the name of so-called law and order.
“Yet they detain, deport, and kill our neighbors in cold blood without due process.”
The remarks came as tensions continue to escalate in Minnesota over federal immigration enforcement and as Democrats weigh whether to withhold funding for DHS amid growing pressure from progressive lawmakers.
